Cyrus Walker’s take on western art is unique, at times whimsical, irreverent and leaning toward the surreal, so I was thrilled to see my article on this Montana State University grad on the cover of the new issue of The Collegian.
Cyrus employs western iconography — horses, cowboys, masked men, arid, wide open landscapes — then juxtaposes them with unexpected settings, or places them in puzzling situations. In Walker’s world, ranch animals appear in furnished rooms and figures levitate. His use of color upends tradition as well. A horse might be green, a sky deep yellow shot through with purple cloud streaks.
His works are rendered in an unabashedly Pop Art style (he was originally influenced by artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Bill Schenck and Fritz Scholder), which has allowed him to stake out his own singular territory within the field of contemporary western art.
“I start with a feeling I want to express,” he says. “I want to visually talk about where people create space, where conversations happen and where connections are made between individuals…
“I will take liberties in the western genre as I pick vessels for human connection and incorporate imagery into that, because in my mind, the western genre is liquid and mobile. It really lends itself to creativity.”
