💗 Invisible Illness Awareness Week 💗

Just because someone doesn’t look sick, doesn’t mean they aren’t fighting battles you can’t see.

Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Crohns Disease has taught me that appearances don’t tell the whole story. Behind the smiles, outfits and everyday moments, there can be pain, fatigue and symptoms that others never see.

Please remember to be kind, be understanding and never judge someone’s health by how they look. 💗

Not all illnesses are visible, but that doesn’t make them any less real.

Invisible Disabilities Week 18-24

I am invisible no more as I am a full-time wheelchair user for past three years. However if you look at the second picture I am sitting on a seat without a mobility aid. Therefore there is no visible signs looking at me I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

MS has so many invisible symptoms I have anxiety, bowel, bladder, brain fog, cognitive dissonance, constant pain, depression, fatigue, grief, numbness, stress and tingling sensations.

I may live with SPMS (Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis). But I will preserve no matter what!

Back home

Only back home in Northern Ireland 8 days and I am already looking at jetting back to sunshine. Researching destinations and hotels in-depth is a happy hobby of mine.

At present I will not be going further than the capital city, Belfast. Grateful the city has so much to offer I plan to explore more within NI. As all trains are fitted with portable ramps, question is where next?

One string of very bad luck?

Travelling on any type of transport can be extremely stressful for anyone. When you have secondary progressive multiple sclerosis or any type of chronic illness it adds fuel to the fire.

Flying is an adventure and brings so much joy to me. However when travelling on staff travel which is a privilege to have and one I am eternally grateful for. At times things simply do not go to plan no matter what you do. Whether that is an administrative error from person booking, cancellation, delay, or in my case flight was completely full apart for jump seats.

Although I had printed approval for jump seat travel being disabled and a full time wheelchair user. That simply is not yet possible with any airline or approved by any worldwide aviation governing body. My parents are able bodied and also had approval to travel on rear jump seats without an ID. They were able to fly back which I encouraged.

I simply had to accept I would need to book a hotel for a night and return following morning to hope a seat was available. As if situation was not stressful enough between numerous visits to bathroom as my bowels would not move.

Finding an accessible room for one night was extremely difficult. In the process of locating, booking and confirming with hotel receptionist. I had booked for the 2027 in error. Hotel did have availability for this year however price was inflated and I had to find an alternative. Which I did, confirming by phone in regard to accessibility and in Spain adapted room is the term used.

Thankfully following morning I was granted a seat on a flight which I had family members already booked to travel on. It is enough to put you off flying for life however not one to admit to defeat. It has simply further fuelled my need to explore when I physically can.

It’s not one string of very bad luck it’s simply real life.

I have a few clients who come to me who have MS and it's always amazing hear their stories and how there lives have changed.
Ms can happen to anyone really and it's bit currently know what causes it. Research is so important in helping find medicines and treatments for these kinds of health issues.

Is it possible to have hot water to shower

I recently purchased a new house and as bathroom was not accessible before I could move in, the bathroom required a complete refit.

Checked into a once favourite hotel @fitzbelfast that I have stayed in numerous times, last stay was February 2026. I stayed for one week due to the need of an accessible bathroom. I already had flights booked with parents to travel to their place in the sun. Before I had decided I would sell my home and purchase a new place.

Unfortunately this hotel had been neglected since my last stay at the start of year. The cracks started to appear mainly by underinvestment of works that required to keep the luxury ethos.

However no hot/warm water in shower despite reporting to house keeping / reception. Daily I was reporting the problem by day four after maintenance was unable to restore water temperature in shower. I was moved to another room as stressful as it was I thought I must stay positive. I would be able to have a hot/warm shower. Following day (fifth) I showered and no warm water. As my patience was pushed to the maximum I counted down the days until I flew to Spain. Not only would I be guaranteed to have a hot shower also blue skies and sunshine.

I didn’t receive a hot shower during my week’s stay. The shower tap was turned fully to hot, was warm nowhere near where it should have been. Remaining two days stay in hotel a warmer yet certainly not hot shower. Extremely disappointed with my recent stay which left me incredibly frustrated and stressed.

I’m optimistic next time my local break will be more successful.

Travelling independently with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) is not what many people actually do or consider.

However travel has always been and will continue to be part of my life until physically I can not manage. As with MS there is no cure yet and it is a progressive condition and no two people with the condition will experience the exact same symptoms.

I went on my first holiday with friends 2nd August 1999 at the age of 18 to the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. Subsequently I did not return on my flight home when the vacation ended. I remained there after being offered a job and meeting so many people. It was the best time of my life for 3 years.

My first job was known on the island as a PR (Public Relations) basically ensuring I entice people into a nightclub 6 nights a week from 2100 until 0500. After 2 months I started working 7 nights a week, on my night off working for a tour operator as a transfer representative. This lead to repping on hedonistic booze cruises and foam parties. Guiding shopping trips, hotel visits and selling excursions a more traditional style. I also worked in bars and for a holiday resort company in one of their complexes.

I have ended up in hospital on 2 separate occasions while abroad unfortunately due to the rollercoaster ride of MS as we cannot control or premeditate when it is going to strike. Importantly fully disclosing medical conditions and updating when required on travel insurance is mandatory. As if you require medical assistance you will be fully covered and have no surprise medical expenses.

Ensuring the chosen accommodation / hotel will meet your specific needs is non negotiable. As when the accommodation is suitable for your specific disability it will preempt accidents occurring.

every moment as it is a special occasion.

A slice of paradise as a wheelchair user

Luxurious Hotel was built in 1975 but refurbished in 2002 and transformed into retro chic glamour of the 70’s giving Miami Beach vibes. Set in a secluded prime location surrounded by palm trees minutes away from protected Maspalomas sand dunes natural reserve. The grounds are perfectly maintained throughout, with beautiful pool areas and gardens all of which were fully accessible.

This is not specifically for wheelchair users but for anyone to use, including suitable for families with pushchairs. Therefore one person could easily enjoy spending time with their young family member throughout while navigating a pushchair independently.

Atmosphere incredibly relaxing while listening to birdsong. Accessibility is not linear and obviously no hotel will have exactly what a person requires as it would be impossible. Just as with Multiple Sclerosis no two people will have identical symptoms and majority of our disease is invisible as we mostly do not look sick.

As a full-time Quickie Salsa Mini2 electric wheelchair user I found the adapted bathroom Room 243 had a fantastic layout. Making my use of bathroom completely functional, accident free, and upmost importance did not drain my energy levels at any point at all.

The bedroom I found was quite compact for a wheelchair however it was manageable. Fantastic white double sliding robes with lowered clothes hanging level to easily access from your wheelchair. Robes also light up on opening switch off closing, giving that upmarket boutique feel. It was a joy selecting clothes in preparation for the following day. Instantly placing a smile on my face each time I opened.

Lower level of bed made transfer from wheelchair to bed effortless, added with a superb quality of mattress along with bed linen and pillows. This made for a peaceful sleep.
