The exhibition “Gaawii Eta-Go Aawizinoo Gaawiye Mkakoons / It’s Not Just a Quill Box” at the @msumuseum celebrates the generations of elders and ancestors who have passed down the intricate art form of quillwork. We’re grateful to feel connected to that legacy of teaching and learning, thanks to @amberkimewon.ojibwearts and this workshop!

Photos of campus that feel like a lock screen 🍂 A tranquil park scene with a wooden picnic table and benches surrounded by tall trees. The ground is covered with fallen autumn leaves, and sunlight filters through the colorful foliage. A resident hall Owen Hall is partially visible in the background.

It was a great pleasure to be invited to deliver the Jerrell H. Shofner Lecture on Florida History and Culture at the Annual Florida Historical Society meeting. I was happy to talk about Florida through comics using our Comic as Data North America (CaDNA) dataset. It was a great way to spotlight the work we are doing with 50 States of Comics Project. My thanks to the society and folks at the University of Central Florida for the awesome job of hosting!!!

Introducing:

Massawe was raised on the southern slopes of Kilima Kiaro, where Chagga homesteads cling to the mountain like living archives. From an early age, he learned the mountain as others learn scripture, its paths, seasons, and silences, guiding climbers along routes his ancestors had walked for generations. But alongside mapping ridges and ravines, Massawe memorized genealogies, tracing family lines the way one traces rivers downhill.

How it went down in @msumuseum , we can't be proud enough of #barazavr premiering at MSU Museum ... an afro futuristic experience exploring what happens if AI achieves singularity through vast African traditional knowledge systems.

If you are in Michigan , East Lansing don't hesitate to get to the exhibition ❤🥂.

Introducing:

Mkwavinyika bears the name of Chief Mkwawa not as ornament, but as obligation. His lineage served the Hehe not as warriors alone, but as battlefield adjudicators, those who determined when war was just, when resistance was sacred, and when bloodshed would betray the people it claimed to defend.

Introducing:

Mapunda (one who carries luggage ) was born into a Yao merchant lineage known less for conquest than for restraint. Generations before her, her clan withdrew from the slave trade, turning instead to cloth, lake fish, and long distance exchange that sustained communities without breaking them. From her mother’s line, she inherited authority in a matrilineal world where power moved quietly through women’s hands.
