Back at HKB Bern! 🎸

A new academic year has started, and here are a few moments from the last one.

Guitar lessons, rehearsals, concerts, time spent together, and special encounters — including a workshop with New Zealander composer Matthew Robert Suttor, whom I had the pleasure of welcoming to HKB.

It's always interesting to see how different musical ideas, experiences and personalities come together, both inside and outside the classroom.

Looking forward to another year of music, discoveries and new projects with my students!

What does a sunflower sound like?
Professor Matthew Suttor’s Fibonacci Sunflower turns the spiral patterns found in sunflower seeds into music. But the conversation became about something even bigger: how nature, science, and music can tell the same story in different languages.
A reminder that music is bigger than the sum of its parts.

What does Jurassic Park have to do with music? 🦖🎵
The rules behind animal movement can resemble the rules of musical harmony. That idea helped inspire Yale Professor Matthew Suttor’s exploration of turning patterns in nature into music.

Looking back at CCAM Fest: Fluxus!

"Sirens and Sunflowers," a workshop with Ivana Dama @ivana.dama, Aubrey Moore @aubrey_moore_, and Matthew Suttor @msuttor, explored the siren disk as a performative and compositional tool.

A siren disk is a rotating disk with patterned holes that produces sound as air passes through—its spinning perforations interrupt airflow to generate precise, measurable tones. Participants devised short Fluxus-style actions and concise scores informed by the mathematical geometry of sunflower patterns.

Back in 2007 I was researching contemporary pieces that explored connections between guitar music and visual arts. While searching databases, I came across Big Red Big Green Big Blue by Matthew Suttor for guitar, video, live electronics, and the sounds of Australian nature waking up at dawn. The piece later became an integral part of my project Smiling Behind the Eyes, in 2008.
The work felt like an immersion in the sound of the instrument and electronics, but also in the colors and textures of the paintings shown in the video—and, of course, in nature.
Almost twenty years later I finally met Matthew in person. Already back then he had been incredibly enthusiastic, open, and supportive of my choices and interpretation of the piece. It was a real pleasure to see his more recent projects and the way he worked with students at HKB.
Many thanks to Elena Casoli for the invitation and for making this meeting possible!

FERP AT WORK! Great crew of veterans and new neighbors came out to save canopy 🌳 behind Pardee Gardens in Hamden 👀 2 more opportunities March 7&21 to learn how to de-vine. LINK IN BIO TO SIGN UP GENIUS & FERP LIST-SERVE. Bonus, you can smell the 🍊 blossoms blooming in greenhouse afterwards! #community #advocacy #stewardship @forestdevining @newhavenparks @msuttor 🐐 ☘️ In the late 1880s, the residential area of New Haven, CT from State Street to Orange St between Edwards Street and East Rock Park was dubbed “Goatville” in because many of the Irish immigrants kept goats, which, not knowing much about deeds and property lines, tended to wander around the neighborhood. Used by outsiders, the nickname carried a contemptuous tone at first, but the neighborhood soon adopted it as a term of affection and pride ☘️ 🐐

I help new homebuyers and families assess their properties for non native species like (most of) these vines and teach them how to replace their lawns with native, perennial, pollinator friendly 🐝 habitats. #killyourlawn

Join us tomorrow, February 4, from 6:30–8pm at CCAM, 149 York Street, for:

Wednesday Wisdom: Resounding Nature & Turing’s Sunflower!

In this hands-on workshop, participants will use accessible tools to create their own data-to-sound sketches, mapping streams of numbers into musical gestures and generative structures they can build upon.

We’ll also trace these experiments to Alan Turing’s enduring legacy, exploring themes from Matthew Suttor's opera I AM ALAN TURING: from computation as a way of modeling nature to the sunflower as a living symbol of emergence, through Fibonacci phyllotaxis and other generative patterns where biology, mathematics, and imagination converge. @i_am_alan_turing

This Wednesday Wisdom event is designed and taught by Matthew Suttor (CCAM Program Manager and Senior Lecturer, Yale College) and Konrad Kaczmarek (Associate Professor Adjunct, Department of Music). @msuttor @konradkaczmarek

CCAM and our collaboration with Yale Planetary Solutions, Music Haven, and more is featured on "It's Your Yale!" @yale

Click the link in our bio to read "Birds, data, and violins" and learn how Matthew Suttor (CCAM Program Manager and faculty in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies) "turns bird flight data into music, inspiring young musicians to explore climate change through AI, sound, and storytelling."

The project team included Suttor; Judith Lichtman, Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology (Chronic Diseases), School of Public Health; Konrad Kaczmarek, Department of Music; Neal Baer, Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health; Richard Prum, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Diego Soto, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Jonathon Gewirtzman, Yale School of the Environment; Vivek Sridhar, Ecology of Animal Sciences, Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior. @yalesph @konradkaczmarek @nealbaer @diego_ellissoto @environmentyale @vivekhsridhar @mpi_animalbehav

Thank you to Linda Clarke for writing about this work, and to Vani Bhushan @vanibhushann for her beautiful photographs from Music Haven that are featured in the piece.

Pictured:

1. Defining the work as “acoustic ecology,” Suttor underscored its aim of fostering the young musicians’ “environmental stewardship.” Here he works with high school and middle school students in the Resounding Nature workshop.

2. Yaira Matyakubova, a member of the Haven String Quartet and artistic director of Music Haven, teaches high school and middle school students during the Resounding Nature workshop. @yairamatyakub

3. Suttor asked the elementary school students to think about how birds sound in nature and in their imaginations, to draw pictures, and to come up with stories that they could transform into music by using all the sounds that violins can make.
