TYG cheering tent for the 2025 @satxmarathon

I love this community for all the support they show to each other. We had so many of our members and coaches racing in the marathon today and we came together at mile 6/7 🫠 ha to keep them pushing. So much fun! And I am so proud of each of you for your months of preparation and dedication to cross that finish line. There is not other community like #theyardgym

The literal translation is “eat tet” because we spend days prepping the meals, all day cooking and eating, sharing fruit and snacks between lunch and dinner, feasting into the night, sending loved ones home with leftovers. Food is our love language. Food is our sign of safety and security. Food is how our parents say “I’m sorry” or “I love you” without saying the words. Food is comfort. Food brings family together. Food is a gift passed down from generation to generation. Food is home.

This Tet was a bittersweet one. We got to meet the newest member of our family for the first time. It was also likely my grandparents’ last Tet, our last tet as a whole. Our last tet with our matriarch who has been our pillar of strength, who sacrificed everything to give us the life we have today. We laughed. We celebrated. We ate. We reminisced. We hoped some part of her could feel how grateful we all are, that she could see the fruits of her labor and know her job is done. We held onto this moment, possibly one of the last when our family was complete.

And we move forward - watching our second gen American children grow. Passing down recipes and cooking duties - cousins cutting and frying banh tet. My mom teaching us how to make banh canh. And for the first time, my sister took on the honor of making our traditional new year pork belly stew (thit kho trung) that was once my grandma’s pride and joy, and then my mom’s, and now it’s her’s. It was so good, she received the highest praises from my grandpa who has been served this dish every Tet for over 90 years.

Like the seasons changing, as does our family. Life continues. Our family may shrink but it also expands. It stretches coast to coast and across the globe. We gathered for Tet to celebrate spring, new life, and the year ahead. But as we hugged and said our goodbyes, we wondered if the next time we are all together again will be to look back instead of forward - to celebrate a beautiful life lived and the legacy left behind. Our hearts are full but heavy with uncertainty. However, we know one thing to be true - we will be comforted by family, by home, by food.
