Lights Out was introduced! Now let's make it law 🎉

Last week, NYC Bird Alliance and nearly 100 Avian Advocates rallied alongside Council Member Harvey Epstein as he introduced Intro 0998 to City Council. This #LightsOut legislation would reduce unnecessary nighttime lighting in commercial, office, and educational buildings.

Start your week strong 💪 with some BIRD-FRIENDLY ACTION! It takes 30 secs ⏱️

#LightsOut is a major step toward protecting the warblers, sparrows, thrushes, and kinglets that pass through our city. By turning #LightsOutNYC, we'll keep these migrants on track and reduce the quarter of a million deadly window collisions that happen in NYC each year.

Let your Council Member know that NYC needs Lights Out. We've already drafted the email 📧 Just fill in your contact info 🤩

A rescue story,
Late march and the city was being drenched with a howling rainstorm. Perched atop her nest built precariously on a AC unit exposed to the elements was a mother Red tail giving it her absolute best to keep her precious clutch of three eggs toasty and warm. She was struggling to keep up.

Usually a healthy hawk is equipped with more than enough to weather even the worst of storms.
But the odds were not in her favor this time...
She was a victim of rodenticide poisoning, an all too common threat facing all of our urban raptors.

So there she was found waterlogged, perched on a park bench and unable to fly let alone care for her nest.
With the help of @brklynwanderer we got the hawk contained and was off to the @wildbirdfund for treatment for various issues.
One week later she was released...
What about her eggs you ask?
Her mate dutifully incubated the eggs and against the odds all three of them hatched and this past weekend three healthy chicks fledged!
Thanks @mtalicha for the assist!
Video of the release at the end.

Here’s to all the plover dads this Father’s Day! You protect your territories, partners and broods, and remind us about resilience, determination, and love. We hold in our hearts one very special plover dad, Clark Kent. Hatched in 2018 in NJ, he spent 4 summers on Fort Tilden in Queens, and wintered, 1,000+ miles south, on the beautiful island of Andros, Bahamas. He was also seen passing by on migration on Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. His final summer with us, 2023, @nycploverproject volunteers and @gatewaynps staff helped protect his plover family, just as we did each summer he spent in NYC, staffing a temporary beach closure, and they fledged one chick. He inspired us to create the @nycploverproject in 2021, and for that we are forever grateful to him.

Thank you, Clark Kent 🩵

Please keep Piping Plovers, New York’s endangered species, & other shorebirds in your hearts and minds this holiday weekend and every day this spring and summer when you head to the beach. One of the biggest acts you can take towards their protection is to leave your dog at home. No dogs are permitted on any Queens, New York City beach - from Far Rockaway to Breezy Point. Signs are posted, please follow them. And please spread the word. Thank you.
