In our Fall Issue, we tell how @MtHoliday in Traverse City became a beacon for community-supported and locally-loved outdoor recreation, and the importance of fostering these spaces from generation to generation. ⛷️🚴

Come join us at Mt. Holiday on September 30th 6pm-8pm for our Fall Issue Release Party! 🙌🏼 We’ll have readings from our contributors, and there will be drinks, food, and plenty of outdoor space to soak in the first days of fall. 🍻🍂

See below for a preview of the story by Mt. Holiday Board Co-President @erin0009 and to read the rest of her story, make sure you secure a copy now with a print subscription, available from our online shop (link in bio)

Here is an excerpt from Erin’s story:
“A local architect drew plans. Someone approached the Coast Guard, which was getting rid of materials from old barracks. Beams were repurposed for the lodge. People volunteered their expertise, labor, and time.

From the beginning, Holiday was built for the community, by the community.

In those early years, Mt. Holiday became the place to go after school in the winter. There was no coordination among parents, no cell phones to communicate plans. You simply went to Holiday. Everyone would be there. A free bus took kids to the hill, parents picked up neighborhood kids on their way over, and the Record-Eagle established a ski school. One photo from 1961 shows a family season pass costing $10.

“It was what Traverse City was,” Denny says. “It’s just what you did in the winter.””

MSB16 was a hoot and a holler. Both the kiddos did their races solo this year. Couple of shredders!
