There are 2.7 million workers in the non-profit sector in Canada.

That means that the sector employs more people than construction, manufacturing, or retail. We also know that the average annual salary for a non-profit worker is 13% lower than the average salary for all Canadian employees. For community non-profit workers, this gap jumps to 31%. (Read @imaginecanada's People First: A Portrait of Canada’s Nonprofit Workforce report to learn more.)

“Decent work is the foundation of a good life and a healthy society,” CEO Colette Murphy said in a recent story on the @atkinsonfoundation's Good Fight Prize.

“Non-profits frequently benefit from a lack of labour awareness in their younger workers. With such a sharp focus on the output of supporting and uplifting the communities, it can be hard for non-profit workers to prioritize improving their own working conditions,” Emmanuel Akanbi wrote in a story on labour rights in the sector.

In recognition of Labour Day next week, we’re sharing four stories that explore different issues and solutions to support decent work in the non-profit sector.

This book came into my life when I needed it most.
For so long, I thought I was the problem. That I didn’t fit anywhere. That if I just tried harder, changed more of myself, I’d finally belong.

Reading We, the Others by Toula Drimonis changed that for me. It helped me understand that what I’ve felt is shaped by larger social realities so many of us share.
I felt seen.
Thank you @mtltoula for making me feel validated, like I wasn’t imagining it.

Belonging is also at the heart of my novel where a Greek-Montreal woman searches for her place, her people, her ride-or-die connections.
But what she discovers is this:
Belonging doesn’t start in a city.
It starts within.

🎯 "I read all 104 pages of this man's rambling this morning. This was an incel, through and through. Sure, he referenced anti-capitalist rhetoric (even though his writing is anti-trans, misogynistic, and anti-immigration, so in fact, socially conservative) and yes, he mentioned Jews and Zionists once in 104 pages, just like he also mentioned or criticized the bourgeoisie and the left and the right at one point. He was all over the place.

But there was one constant over and over and over again: women.

For 104 pages he went on and on about "pervasive male loneliness," and "isolation," and how "the girl that was supposed to be his girlfriend was taken from him." and how he was "forcibly deprived of romantic love" and how the system "perpetuates isolation and celibacy for common men," how he was "deprived of of intimacy," and how average common men like him are "nothing more than a stunted, broken unwanted husk of a human male."

This rhetoric is no different than the manifesto left behind by Eliott Rodger, before he carried out the 2014 Isla Vista killings.

Or Alek Minassian who also identified with incel ideology and grievances about romantic rejection before committing the Toronto van attack.

These incels are terrorists. They hate women. They feel entitled to their attention and want a world in which women have no rights and would be somehow forced to enter into relationships with them. He says so as much in his writing.

It's frankly horrifying that so many people are trying to ascribe so many different motives to this man when it's all there in black-and-white."

🪷 " Marjane Satrapi, the renowned French-Iranian graphic novelist (author of Persepolis) and film director has passed away at the age of 56, only a year after she lost her husband.

Satrapi was a fearless voice for feminism, human rights, and freedom. Through her work and public engagement, she consistently advocated for women's rights, arguing that women should have the freedom to choose whether or not to wear a hijab.

She criticized compulsory veiling in Iran while also opposing the idea that women should be judged or restricted because they choose to wear a headscarf.

The core issue, she argued, is whether women have agency over their own bodies and lives.

Discussing women's rights and freedom, her main points always were:

* No government should force women to wear a hijab.

* Women should not be discriminated against for choosing to wear one.

* The focus should be on education, economic independence, and equal rights rather than policing women's clothing choices.

May she rest in peace. 💔"

"It's easy to condemn blatantly white supremacist speech alluding to an all-white Quebec. What I want our politicians to do is to also condemn-with the same speed and conviction-the barely veiled racist speech of certain pundits when they talk about "mass migration," "being invaded" and "being demographically drowned" by "culturally incompatible" immigrants. Rhetoric that not only isn't condemned, but seems to inspire certain local political figures.

Just because a xenophobic sentiment is hidden behind carefully chosen and polite euphemisms, it doesn't mean it isn't the exact same sentiment. Who's calling that out?!

Normalizing rhetoric that targets Others (religious minorities, immigrants, etc.) and views them as a menace, a problem, or inferior to the majority, is always the first step towards dehumanizing them, and allowing Fascist and white supremacist groups to take up space.

One quick look at the social media comments under the news of this event, and you will already see plenty of average Quebecers attempting to justify the hate this group is peddling. It doesn't take much to normalize hateful discourse; especially in these polarizing times.

And, no... dismissing or trying to distance ourselves from the event and claiming that Second Sons is a group from Ontario is deep denial. We are not safe or immune from this kind of racism here either. Let's not act like Atalante Quebec, La Meute, Storm Alliance, and the FQS don't exist in Quebec.

And while I congratulate our politicians for calling it out, I also want some self reflection from them and a willingness to address systemic and institutional bias and policy debates that disproportionately target minority Quebecers and fuel anti-immigrant sentiment. These are not separate conversations."
