america has always been good at selling a dream. work hard enough, chase your ambitions and one day, everything will fall into place but cinema has spent decades questioning that promise.

not everyone gets the same chance at happiness, and for some, the pursuit of a better life comes at a cost. these films look beyond the fantasy to ask who gets to live the american dream and who gets left behind.

this month, paris, texas and tangerine join @mubianz , two very different portraits of america and the people searching for a place in it. so we used their arrival as an excuse to explore the films that challenge the promises we’ve been taught to believe in.

comment “DREAM” and we’ll send you a popmybub code for 30 days of MUBI free in australia and new zealand.
