🛵 FLCL 🛵

FLCL - フリクリ
1st Edition with obi
Circa 2000年10月23日

I came across a first print copy of FLCL that had an obi with it. All of the information I could find and pick out from the obi corresponds with the printing and dvd release, but I couldn’t find much more about it. One other copy was posted but didn’t provide much more information from what I could find. I am hoping someone knows more or that we start to see more of these appear with all the hype in manga and zasshi collecting. For now, l’m going to cautiously call this win but with some reservations. If it turns out that these tankobon had obis, this might be one of the few remaining.

💚 Himeno 💚

Funko pop: Himeno 1760
Signed by: Mariya Ise (伊瀬・茉莉也)
CN: ひめの

I’m really glad with how well this came out, even as a single color. It’s been a big CSM week for us with the Power signing and now Himeno. I don’t know what the prospects are of Makima and Reze’s seiyuus signing, or even Kobeni’s seiyuu signing again. I assume it’s terrible for all three, but glad to at least have what we have.

We have some CSM stuff coming soon. Stay tuned.

🗡Last Samurai Standing, Vol. 6🗡 By: Shogo Imamura; Tatsuz (Art)

Status: 7 Volumes, Ongoing

Demographic: Seinen

Genres: Action, Historical, Drama

Themes/Tropes: Meiji Restoration, Samurai, Political Intrigue, Battle of Succession, Survival Of The Fittest, Westernization, Modern vs. Traditional Values

⭐️Synopsis: It's 1878, over one decade into the Meiji Era, and the Age of the Samurai has passed...or has it? Once an ad beckons "those with exceptional martial accomplishment" to meet May 5th at midnight on the grounds of Tenryuji Temple for an opportunity to win ¥100,000 in gold, nearly 300 former samurai arrive. Unbeknownst to them, the contest organizer, Enju, has lured them to participate in a kodoku, or battle royale, until only one participant remains. Who will survive?

Volume 6 continues from the explosive cliffhanger in Vol. 5, which revealed a major assassination plot of a government official close to one of the main characters. In addition to observing various characters strategizing ways to successfully pass the game's next checkpoint, the reader learns Kyojin Tsuge's backstory (the former shinobi, depicted on this volume's cover). It is great to finally see his motives in participating in the kodoku. The identity of Enju, the kodoku's organizer, is also revealed.

As previously stated, most of the characters are decent and move the story along well. The pacing is fast, but mainly due to the action. The paneling for the action scenes is executed well, and the fights are not very long. Instead, significant time is spent strategizing, building alliances, and moving to the next checkpoint to reach the final destination in Tokyo.

Overall, I enjoyed this volume. If you are a fan of historical fiction with samurai-themed action, I recommend trying this series. Volume 7 will release on March 16th, 2027.⛩️

I picked up Vol. 2 Bright Rare Gojo. This one is much more detailed than Vol. 1, and reads: I’ll make sure, with my own hands, that Kitagawa-san reaches 1st place. I’m glad we were able to pick up Marin’s Vol. 2 bright rare earlier because the price on it now is crazy.

Do you think we’ll see a season 3?

🦋 Vinsmoke Reiju 🦋

PSA 10 OP06 Reiju Leader Alt-Art

The portrait-style alt leader Reiju is easily one of my favorite Reiju cards. I do like the recent SP but mainly for uniqueness and rarity, but prefer this leader for its style and affordability. I wonder if Wholecake is the last time we see Reiju and the rest of the Vinsmoke family. I thought maybe we might see some connection on Egghead via Vegapunk, but it also may not even matter to the greater story as they pretty much served their purpose for Wholecake and filling in Sanji’s back story prior to Baratie. Either way, nabbing this Reiju leader for $40 was an easy W.

🍎August/September Reading Wrap-Up 🍎

Hello, Everyone! 👋🏽 August and September were definitely jam-packed months. From packing and relocating for a new position, to taking care of various other personal matters, there were no dull moments. As such, my reading was mostly on the backburner. Across both months, I've read a total of 6 books (4 novels, 1 reference book, and 1 manga). Sadly, I neglected my ongoing digital reads, like One Piece, Akane-banashi, and my re-read of Maison Ikkoku. However, once totally settled, I should resume those soon. I did have the fortune of continuing the weekly Mao chapters, though. 😉

Though all great reads, my favorites were both of the Beverly Jenkins novels: Always and Forever and Topaz, and my re-read of The Five People You Meet In Heaven. Once @melanin_n_manga finish our buddy read of Billy Bat Vol. 2, I'm sure it will make my favorites list for October. 😁

It is no secret that Beverly Jenkins is one of my all-time favorite authors for her blend of African American historical fiction and romance genres. As such, I delighted in reading Topaz and Always and Forever. Both novels occur in the mid-1880s with crossover main characters, so they are, essentially, companion novels.

In Topaz, Kate Love (a newspaper reporter) is forced into an ultimatum: she must marry Marshal Dixon Wildhorse, the formidable Black Seminole lawman in Indian Territory, or her father will be imprisoned (and possibly face execution, per custom) for stealing and selling the marshal's cattle. The premise is a window dressing for a more nuanced story, filled with memorable characters and well-researched historical moments, such as the role of the Seminole and Black former and fugitive slaves during the War of 1812, and the tragedy of the Negro Fort and Trail of Tears afterward. As for Always and Forever, the mail order bride wagon train subplot in Topaz becomes the main plot point. Both MCs, banker and independent businesswoman, Grace Atwood, and former Texan deputy, Jackson Blake, are strong characters with intriguing backstories. Both novels are great for fans of historical fiction.

🦋 Vinsmoke Reiju 🦋

PSA 10 AC01 Vinsmoke Reiju
Admirable Collection Vol. 1
OP06-068C

Reiju featuring in the milk carton collection was so appropriate. The card full art card design and colors are really beautiful, but I could honestly do without the milk carton symbol. I did pick up a few of these promos recently just due to the fact that graded copies are quite cheap. The boxes were scalped heavily by just about every“retailer” out there, and like every other collection it looks like Bandai won’t print again.

Speaking of the current market, it’s pretty trashy for LCSs to play both the victim and predator. Using “loyalty” (monthly spending, number of orders above $250, memberships, etc.) as a means to determine chance to buy at 80-90% market while also begging people to “support your LGS” is gross. I like competition but I have stopped patronizing several shops after they moved to these methods. Unfortunately, the market is still hot enough that we’ll probably see this for a while. My hope is the local community remembers.
