Early start and he did very well on his first go around of training. He is a 6 week old puppy and was able to sit in the first half hour session while learning the mat and beginning of conditioning and placement. Very VERY impressive! Of course it makes a HUGE difference when you have a trained and qualified professional who has been at this for decades 😎 Thanks Roger @multipurposek9 for your patience and guidance. Who here needs a service dog? 🐕‍🦺 I know a trainer 🫣 #WalleeKennels home of #AAALabs

Today, for Service dog Saturday we are featuring one of the people behind the scenes. The trainer. @multipurposek9 has been a dog trainer for over three decades and has trained 1000's of dogs.
Roger @multipurposek9 has trained dogs since he was a young child. Roger feels he has always been able to communicate with dogs
through body language. To this day,he rarely engages dogs verbally when training. He uses subtle cues and keeps his hands quiet. Years ago, Roger was a champion trick dog trainer. He trained the actor Jack Lemmon’s black Standard Poodle “Chloe". Roger has great memories of Jack Lemmon driving in his Porsche with the top down and Chloe riding shotgun. But one day, a person in a wheelchair watched one of his demos. Afterwards, he came up to Roger and said those are great tricks, but they are also "tasks" that would be helpful to disabled people. He began training service dogs after that exchange.
His favorite service dog breeds are Goldens & Labradors. His favorite skills to train are odor detection and trick (which is task for people with disabilities). Roger loves the science of odor detection and the chaining of behaviors to shape a particular task that changes someone’s life. The most memorable trick Roger trained was with a medical alert dog. If the handler had a seizure & went down on his stomach, the dog was trained to roll him over and push the medical alert button around his neck.
Roger's service dog program is done in 3 modules: obedience, public access, and task. In total, it takes about 160 hours of training to get the dog and handler working in public together.
Roger is based out of California but is starting online classes Nov. 1. For any Golden Pawtrol followers, he is giving a 10% discount if verified they follow you. He will be conducting Puppy Head Start and K9 Nose Work, imprinting odor. He can do one on one or a group format using zoom.
Check out @multipurposek9 for lots of training videos and give him a follow.
We thank him for sharing his gift, which changes the lives of so many!

Gracie. SDiT. Learning a dumbbell grip, return and out. As a mobility assist dog she will need to pick up phones, keys, find and retrieve meds etc. Form follows Function. It’s when trainers and handlers understand that principal training goes smoothly.🦮🇺🇸🐾❤️🦴

This sweet pup is named Gracie. Gracie was born in April of 2022, and her full name is: Spirit Guide Shannon Lake, call name "Gracie." @service_dog_graceie. Gracie was selected for her future job as a service pup after being tested at 49 days old. She arrived in California on July 2 to begin her training with @MultipurposeK9. It has been determined that Gracie will mostly be a mobility assist K9. She is cued in French, has completed her AKC STAR puppy, and is ready to test for her AKC CGC and TKN. Her task training will begin soon, some of which will be to brace, retrieve items for her handler, take items from her handler, and bring to other people while under directional control, carry light packages etc.

Since Gracie arrived for training, she has been exposed to all sorts of noises, smells, distractions, and textures. She needs to learn to remain calm and focused in all settings and situations. Gracie does not yet have an identified handler, but once that is known, her training will be more specific to the needs of her handler.
Gracie lives with her big brothers, Lykos and Bodie, and loves to play and cuddle with them when she is not training.
Check out Gracie's page for many videos of her during training and check out our stories today, too, for some of those training videos!

Thank you @service_dog_graceie and @multipurposek9 for all the info and for all you do!
