Mulu, Borneo Sarawak — 4D3N 🌿🦇

If you’re planning a trip to Mulu, Borneo Sarawak, here’s what we did for 4 days!

We flew in with @airborneoairways ✈️ and stayed at @mulumarriott , which made everything pretty easy and convenient.

Day 1 — Chill & easy
We kept the first day super chill. Checked in, explored the hotel, spent some time at the gym and just enjoyed the surroundings. No need to rush!

Day 2 — Clearwater Cave + Wind Cave 🪨
We explored Clearwater Cave and Wind Cave. We also took a boat through the rainforest to get to the caves, which was such a nice experience.

Day 3 — Deer Cave + Lang Cave + Bat Exodus 🦇
This was probably the highlight of the trip!
We visited Deer Cave and Lang Cave, then stayed in the national park in the evening to watch the famous Bat Exodus.
Millions of bats came flying out of the caves to look for food, and we watched them for around 20 minutes. It was honestly an experience to see them all flying across the sky 🦇
After a full day of exploring, we went back to the hotel for a massage. Definitely needed it!

Day 4 — Going home with a heavy heart 🥹
It was time to head home, and honestly, one of the hardest things to leave was the FOOD.
Everything at the hotel was so good and we were so well-fed every day that I actually ended up gaining weight from this trip. It was worth it though 🤣

A few things I really enjoyed about Mulu:
🌿 The weather was nice and not too hot
🌳 Most places were surrounded by trees and nicely shaded
🦟 Somehow, I didn’t get a single mosquito bite throughout the whole trip!

Staying at @mulumarriott also made things really convenient. They provided transportation, local guide and also packed lunch for our adventures so we didn’t have to worry too much!

Overall, Mulu was such a nice little escape. Nature, caves, good food, gym, massage… basically everything we needed for a few days 🥰

Borneo never fails to surprise me. So many beautiful places to explore! 🌳

I’ve stayed at a lot of beautiful hotels over the years, and funny enough, it’s rarely the biggest or most expensive things that I remember.

I remember the hotel where check in happened over a drink with a view instead of standing at reception. The one where every night I came back to a different homemade tea and honey waiting in my room. The beautifully set breakfast tables. The staff who remembered what I liked. The complimentary boats and shuttles that made exploring the destination so much easier.

Those little details have become some of the things I look for most when I stay somewhere. They make me feel looked after, and, to me, they’re often what separates a beautiful hotel from a truly great one.

Real life Jurassic Park 🦖 Welcome to Mulu 🌿
This place feels completely disconnected from the rest of the world—and in a way, it is. There are no roads leading here; you can only reach this remote sanctuary by taking a propeller plane over an endless ocean of deep green jungle.

Once you land, it’s pure wilderness. Endless primary rainforest, winding rivers, and some of the largest, most massive cave systems on the planet. But the absolute highlight happens every evening at dusk: the bat exodus.

Watching tens of thousands of bats swarm out of Deer Cave in massive, undulating ribbons to hunt for the night is an absolute spectacle. Standing there in total awe, watching nature pull off a show like that, was a truly humbling experience. 🦇

Real Life Jurassic Park🦖 Willkommen in Mulu 🌿
Dieser Ort fühlt sich an, als wäre er komplett vom Rest der Welt abgeschnitten – und auf eine gewisse Weise ist er das auch. Es führen keine Straßen hierher; man erreicht dieses abgelegene Paradies ausschließlich mit einer kleinen Propellermaschine über einem endlosen Meer aus tiefgrünem Dschungel.

Sobald man landet, ist da nur noch pure Wildnis. Endloser Primärregenwald, kurvenreiche Flüsse und einige der größten und gewaltigsten Höhlensysteme der Welt. Aber das absolute Highlight passiert jeden Abend in der Dämmerung: der Ausflug der Fledermäuse. Zu beobachten, wie zehntausende von Fledermäusen in riesigen, geschwungenen Formationen aus der „Deer Cave“ strömen, um in der Nacht zu jagen, ist ein unfassbares Spektakel. Dort zu stehen und dieses Naturschauspiel mit eigenen Augen zu sehen, hat mich wirklich ehrfürchtig gemacht. 🦇

A 30 minute glimpse into the RM100 iconic landscape. Our elevation was about 1200 metres ASL with a total distance of 2.5km, yet, it took us close to 12 hours to complete. Indeed, it was one of the toughest hikes I've done in awhile. And yes it is wayyyyy harder and dangerous than Mount Kinabalu in terms of terrain. The ascent started at 45 degrees for a brief moment before its continuous 75 degrees to near vertical rock climb and 17 ladders! One wrong footwork and you are pretty much kaput. Needless to say it was unforgiving. But like the rest of my climbs, I said this little prayer; if i am meant to see it, then I will, but coming down safely is a must! Undoubtedly it was a test endurance and grit, but more so than that, it was always about the perpetual self-redefinition to the person I've become today. Some summits are measured by elevation. Others are measured by the strength they reveal within us. There is always a humbling lesson to be learnt from nature. This is Mulu Pinnacles,Sarawak.

The maidens of Mandara moving through the Mulu Marriott 🌳✨

Walking on these raised boardwalks surrounded by the ancient rainforest, I realise that in this remote wilderness, many of the staff live far from their loved ones. Yet, every smile, conversation, and small gesture of care made this isolated jungle feel incredibly safe and welcoming.

Mulu is a breathtaking UNESCO paradise on its own, but it was the incredible Marriott team that truly made my stay feel like home in the heart of the rainforest.

I left my heart here, and I know I shall return.

The true magic of Mulu isn't just the spectacular landscape; it’s the people. Malaysian Hospitality at its finest! 💚
