Growing up in Westfield, NJ, I’d heard stories about a bogeyman who killed his entire family, burned his house down, and then went on the run. Later, I learned that this childhood story was based on a real murderer, John List (who was caught and died while incarcerated in ’08).

This was one of several eerie stories from Westfield that has inspired movie and tv adaptations over the years.

Over on the “Murder Made Fiction,” podcast, co-hosts @AmandaJaneStern and Joe Lipsett ( @bstolemyremote ) are spending all of August looking at these various adaptations. Already, the podcast has given a primer episode about the true story of John List’s crime and unusual capture. The podcast will examine the “Stepfather” movies inspired by John List. In addition, @murdermfiction is watching Netflix’s The Watcher series, which explores a different Westfieldian bogeyman, AND has a connection to the List case.

This weekend, Al Pacino and Dan Stevens battle demons in The Ritual. The marketing has been sensational. But so is the real-life possession case that the film is based on — in fact, it’s one of the most infamous in America.

Murder Made Fiction co-host Joe Lipsett has the real story:

“In 1928, a 40-year-old woman was the subject of an exorcism in Earling, Iowa. The event took place at the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters and lasted for approximately 23 days, after which one of the priests involved, Reverend Joseph Steiger, told his first-hand account to Reverend Carl Vogl, who published it in 1935 in a 52-page German-language book entitled Begone Satan! A Soul-Stirring Account of Diabolical Possession.”
