a museum inside a hat
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
🪜 I remember nine years ago, on a day like today, in Belgrade, wearing this bowler hat for the first time, filled with 19 artworks I had received by different friends for a museum inside a hat.

🪜 I remember I bought it in Maastricht, in a hat shop that is now gone. I chose it because it was the one that fitted me best. I later realized that, even though it was a classic English bowler hat, it had actually been made in Spain by hat makers called Roche & Fernández.

🪜I remember the owner, an older woman with a deep voice, told me something that sounded very strange to me that day: “Listen, young man, with that hat you will receive a lot of attention.”

🪜 I remember I didn’t anticipate everything that was going to change for me because of a hat, I was never a “hat person.”

New @museelegitime 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙢 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜(カメ 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙢), 2024 by @bizarre_kyoto

🐢🪜🐢🪜🐢🪜

Two weeks ago, we were walking through the streets of Kyoto, and Amilcar pointed out a ‘bizarre’ sign. On it, a little turtle/tortoise wearing a hat was climbing some stairs, similar to the ones I use in messages for my emojis. Very intrigued, we looked closer, and it turned out to be a hat shop. We climbed the stairs and arrived at the third floor, surprised by the same poster we have at home by Shimabuku (‘My Teacher Tortoise’).

Once inside, Atom Uchida and his colleague were working on making new hats. I immediately noticed the quality of their technique and the special designs they had. Atom looked at me and said that if I wanted to try a hat, I could just do it. I picked a blue/purple one and saw that it had little triangles in the back.

“It is inspired by a prehistoric turtle,” he told me. I tried it on, excited.

I tried to explain about a museum in a hat that I had started years ago, where I invite different artists to contribute a piece small enough or immaterial so it can fit inside while I wear it to different places, including that day. I took off the hat that I was wearing.

I think our amusement was shared. Amilcar asked me to look behind a table they had next to the entrance. There, Atom keeps part of his collection of tortoise and turtle figures.

“I have the same!” I said. Many friends gift me turtles and tortoises.

“Oh! I have two tortoises at home; they are my best friends and teachers,” Atom said.

It became inevitable for this growing institution to invest in a new museum building. Atom has a greater collection at home and also a figures collection of the prehistoric gigantic turtle monster Gamera, who inspired the design of this new museum building.

NEW 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧-𝙨𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙖𝙩 / 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙢 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 designed for the @museelegitime by @demurehats_amsterdam

Yuki Isshiki accepted this comission, crafting this paddington hat with ‘velore’ or ‘peachbloom’ fur, purchased from an old hat shop when it closed in Lyon circa 1950. Yuki explained to me on Sunday that ‘demure’ owes its name due to a modest or shy elegance.

This hat replaces the void left by the absence of the 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙩, previously donated by @stockwell_jeffrey 🪄🪄🪄now unlocatable.

Contributions by @printedmatterinc , @printedmatter_stmarks and the @mondriaanfonds aided in this reconstruction.

Third photo features the hat alongside the entire collection, now totaling 186 pieces displayed accross 14 museum buildings in the form of hats.
