De Amsterdamse School-beweging geeft sinds 1916 kleur aan het straatbeeld met uitbundige, dynamische architectuur. Fiets je door de stad, dan herken je het werk van deze architecten en ontwerpers ongetwijfeld in voormalige arbeiderswijken. A museum exploring the world of the Amsterdam School, from architecture and furniture to objects.

Incredibly intricate, handcrafted details are woven into the building’s bold, simple architectural forms, from window frames and doors to the smallest corners. It feels like an ultimate exploration of how far architectural detailing can be pushed, regardless of construction complexity or efficiency. Sculptor Hildo Krop is said to have carved the brick and stone details. Even after exploring the interior, I spent quite some time walking around the building, discovering hidden details like a treasure hunt.

The collection of furniture and interiors by Michel de Klerk, Piet Kramer, and other Amsterdam School designers was impressive. Their work has a distinct sense of time and place, with forms noticeably different from other designs of the same period.

The complex includes housing, a school, and a post office. Its ship-like shape when viewed from above gave Het Schip its name.

One of the most enjoyable and memorable museums I visited in the Netherlands. Located a little outside Amsterdam’s city center, it was pleasantly quiet, with plenty of time to explore. Highly recommended for anyone interested in design and architecture.

Made it to @museumhetschip and as an #architect, it’s mind-blowing. This is the absolute peak of the Amsterdam School, but what really hits you isn’t just the anesthetic, it’s the socialist ideology behind it. Michel de Klerk wasn't just designing public housing; he was building "palaces for the working class" to give ordinary people beauty and dignity.
In the wider shots, you can feel the organic weight of those curved brick walls. But swipe through to the details and the craftsmanship is just insane. Stepping inside the old post office feels like a time capsule of their Gesamtkunstwerk approach—where everything, down to the phone booth, follows the exact same design language. A powerful reminder of what social architecture can look like when it refuses to compromise on art.

How Amsterdam got its shape, building by building. Part one: from a merchant's house to a block that floats on the harbour.

1. Huis Bartolotti, 1622 — the facade kinks twice to follow the bend in the Herengracht, so it shows itself from both directions along the water.

2. Het Schip, 1921 — social housing with a hollow tower that serves no purpose whatsoever; De Klerk built it anyway.

3. Olympisch Stadion, 1928 — the Olympic flame burned here for the first time in history. Locals called the tower the pilots' ashtray.

4. Burgerweeshuis, 1960 — Aldo van Eyck's orphanage made of 328 identical domed units, "a house like a city". The rules it was designed around were obsolete the day it opened.

5. De Nederlandsche Bank, 1968 — the gold vault is now a public hall, all six vault doors left in place.

6. Entrepotbrug, 1992 — an apartment building you walk over the water through; as long as an intercity train, as high as a passenger ship.

7. The Whale, 2000 — two corners lifted off the ground for daylight, roof cut to the angle of the late sun. The name arrived by itself.

(NL) Eén van mijn favoriete musea viert dit jaar haar jubileum!

Al 25 jaar is @museumhetschip het boegbeeld van de Amsterdamse school. En dat moet zo blijven! Ga daarom ook een keer naar een tijdelijke expo over een belangrijke originator (kunstenaar, ontwerper, architect) bekijken, of beleef in de vaste tentoonstelling de geschiedenis van deze eigenzinnige architectonische stijl, of ga op tour in en rond het museum en zie in het echt hoe bijzonder deze praktische kunstvorm eigenlijk wel niet is en daarom behouden moet blijven.

Draag dus ook een baksteentje bij, op wat voor manier dan ook!
