Day 38 — Museum De Lakenhal

GRAVENRAMEN

These stained-glass windows were made by Willem Thibaut in 1587–1588 and depict the counts and countesses of Holland.

Originally there were 35. Only 12 survived.

After the Sint Jorisdoelen was demolished in 1821, the surviving windows were stored in a wooden chest in the attic of Leiden Town Hall.

In 1872, they were moved to Museum De Lakenhal and installed alongside the staircase.

More than 400 years old — and still stopping people on the stairs.

Day 52 — Mauritshuis, Den Haag

DAY OUT

The Mauritshuis is one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated art museums.

Housed in a beautiful 17th-century palace in the heart of Den Haag, it is home to an extraordinary collection of Dutch and Flemish masterpieces, including:

Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring

Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp

Fabritius’s The Goldfinch.

“Go to a museum
Find a place to hide
Quiet contemplation
Will heal you inside.”

(Museums are often free and when they aren’t, a membership usually represents really good value.

If you join up, you get to go to openings of the latest shows. You are given updates and insights with regular newsletters and publications. Sometimes the artists visit and give talks. It gives you a regular view of everything on show, so you become really familiar with certain works and also develop artist favourites.

It’s nice to go to cool down in a hot summer as they regulate the temperature to conserve the art. And in winter, it’s a pleasantly ambient environment with a place to put your coat and bags. You can sometimes find a really good cup of tea and an affordable snack or lunch at the best ones.

The Stedelijk Musuem in Amsterdam is an historic location stuffed with cutting edge contemporary art. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea but you can certainly get one of those too, (if you are in time before they grumpily decide they are closed and tell you to get lost.)

Stedelijk big events are very grand, attracting the shiny ‘arterati’ from all over the world. One day, when they figure out what the Stedelijk actually is and what they actually do, it might be one of the best museums in the world. It’s just a question of leadership, listening and ambition. They have great Ambassadors.

One of the best things about the crazy and incoherent buildings of the Stedelijk are the hidey-holes and peek-a-boo views around the internal spaces.

You really can find places to escape and contemplate, which is a great way to pass an hour, especially when surrounded by creativity, colour and cool people to watch.

The public in museums are a constant source of fascination. Just watching them go by is sometimes sublime entertainment and occasionally better than the art.

Wonky likes to find places to hide out and watch in museums. It works best if you sit really still and just let the vibe sort things out for you. You’ve found a special Stedelijk spot right there eh Wonky? “Peek a boo!”)

I had no idea @nxtmuseum opened it’s doors August 2020 in Amsterdam North. Such a fantastic museum! It’s dedicated to immersive experiences at the intersection of art, science, and technology. In the current exhibition Still Processing seven visionary artists invite you to step inside shifting landscapes of movement, light, sound, and evolving digital forms. Highly recommended! ©️ralphhendriks #museumvisit #museumexperience #anewworld #nextlevel #museumkaart
