Three months of the Altenbernd Foundation.

This past month brought new collaborations, our participation in Museums for All, the introduction of our first museum store offerings, and new support for our technological initiatives.

We are also extending invitations and welcoming nominations for voluntary advisory roles.

La mala gestión es la principal razón por la que los trabajadores abandonan los museos de arte en Estados Unidos, según un nuevo informe de Museums Moving Forward (@museumsmovingforward) basado en las respuestas de 681 antiguos empleados del sector.

El 85% de los encuestados señaló la gestión institucional como uno de los motivos de su salida, mientras que el 44% de quienes renunciaron voluntariamente afirmó haberse sentido «empujado a salir». Fuera de los museos, el 73% encontró mayor flexibilidad, el 64% mejor salario y el 55% más oportunidades de ascenso. Solo el 23% volvería a trabajar en un museo sin condiciones; el 63% lo haría únicamente bajo circunstancias especiales, como la existencia de representación sindical. Poor management, low pay and burnout are driving art museum workers across the United States way from the sector, according to the findings of a new report.⁠

The Former Art Museum Workers Study was undertaken by Museums Moving Forward (MMF) (@museumsmovingforward)—an independent organisation that describes itself as being “devoted to envisioning and creating a more just museum sector by 2030”—between May and July this year. The organisation received 681 responses from workers in every department area and position level in US art museums.⁠

A significant majority—85 percent—of respondents said that poor management was one of the reasons they left the field, with two-thirds of that number saying it was a major factor in their departure. ⁠

It is very hard to find basic information about what it is actually like to work in a gallery, and even harder to find information about artists’ studios.
Salary progression, promotion rates, how long people stay, what benefits are available, and where they go when they leave.

The little that exists: the SML Art Market Talent Report, produced by Sophie Macpherson Ltd with ArtTactic, now in its second edition; The Art Newspaper’s reporting on work-life balance among gallery staff; the AWITA and artnet report published this year; and, for museums rather than commercial galleries, the Museums Moving Forward study of US institutions.

Meanwhile, the market is counted and analysed to the last decimal.
We know global sales rose four per cent last year to just under sixty billion dollars; we know which segment grew and by how much; we know what collectors under forty are buying.

While it is clear and reasonable that attention to the market is necessary and paramount, it is sad that the consequences of its shifts are only considered within a very small radius, and seldom all the way down to the personnel working every day, in all capacities, in the field.

We are excited to announce a two-year pilot project of the DREAM Consortium, a partnership between MMF, Black Trustee Alliance (@blacktrusteealliance), The Burns Halperin Report (@charlieburnsnyc @juliahalperin), SMU DataArts (@smudataarts) and six US art museums: Dia Art Foundation (@diaartfoundation), Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (@deyoungmuseum @legionofhonor), Perez Art Museum Miami (@pamm), Seattle Art Museum (@seattleartmuseum) Toledo Museum of Art (@toledomuseum) and Walker Art Center (@walkerartcenter). Together, we are building and testing a key piece of missing infrastructure for the field. A DREAM indeed!
