I don’t always know what I’m trying to say when I sit down to write. Sometimes I only understand it later, when I hear it back and have some perspective. It’s all just reflections and interpretation really. I will say things get a lot clearer when there’s a little absorption.

Composing a dark fantasy main theme for an unannounced game project 🗡️🖤

Heavy, brooding choirs, relentless epic ostinato strings, and a thick, pounding rhythm. Scoring for dark fantasy isn’t just about sounding loud—it’s about capturing a sense of looming dread, ancient scale, and relentless atmosphere.

Arranged and produced entirely inside Cubase.

Gamer & developer friends, I have a question for you: What kind of game or specific title do you think this theme would fit best? Drop your ideas and potential game matches in the comments! 👇

Creating character themes that evolve as scenes unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of scoring. To give this scene from Brave its mysterious edge, much of the music is anchored around tritones, paired with a recurring 6-note “Fate” leitmotif that emerges across three contrasting moments—passed sequentially from solo cello, to French horn, and finally to full strings.

The Witch’s theme weaves eccentric woodwind textures with unsettling harmonic leaps to reflect her erratic energy. Keep an ear out for the moment she says “Trust me”—it is underscored by a stark diminished chord, musically signalling her deceptive nature right beneath the surface.

Strings (BBCSO Pro & OT Layers): Rich low-string stabs add dramatic dynamic accents, while BBC Pro desk legatos blended with Orchestral Tools’ Layers thicken the overall texture. Delicate solo cello and violin carry the score’s intimate narrative beats.

Woodwinds (CineWinds & BBCSO Pro): High-register piccolos, flutes, and oboes drive expressive melodic lines, grounded by BBCSO bass flutes, bass clarinets, and a rumbling contrabassoon for deep warmth.

Brass (CineBrass & BBCSO Pro): CineBrass horn sections combined with BBCSO brass desks deliver noble swells and harmonic support during key emotional shifts.

Percussion & Keyboards (CinePercussion): Bowed vibraphones, sustained suspended cymbals, and a delicate céleste introduce an ethereal, glassy shimmer to evoke the spark of magic.

Reimagining the iconic 1985 ThunderCats theme as a massive hybrid cinematic symphony ⚔️⚡️

Bernard Hoffer’s original score was already a masterclass in aggressive brass writing and relentless energy. I wanted to take that nostalgic firepower and rebuild it for modern cinema and game trailers.

The production behind this hybrid arrangement:

The Orchestral Backbone: Wall-of-sound brass stabs, driving staccato strings, and heavy cinematic taikos/percussion driving the momentum.

The Modern Edge: Layered analog synth pulses, sub-bass braams, and custom hybrid risers filling the low and ultra-high frequency space.

The Performance: Live keys tracking directly into the project session in Cubase.

What classic 80s or 90s animated theme / game track should get the full hybrid cinematic treatment next? Drop your favorite in the comments! 👇

As the narrative progresses from the initial spark into cosmic expansion, the music needs to scale up dramatically to match the visual scope. The cue builds continuously towards a grand reveal, culminating in a huge climax as the shot opens up wide.

Here’s the virtual instrument breakdown:
🗣️ Choir (Spitfire Audio Originals Epic Choir) The standout moment of this section occurs right as the visuals open up into the big shot. Layering Spitfire’s Epic Choir provided immediate emotional weight, giving that crucial grand, celestial lift to signal the peak of the journey.

🎻 Strings (BBCSO Pro, Spitfire Albion One & OT Helix) Driving string passages keep the momentum moving forward. I used BBCSO desk legatos for articulate melodic lines, while Spitfire’s Albion One String Hits added punchy dynamic accents to ground the rhythmic changes.

🪈 Woodwinds (CineWinds Core & BBCSO Pro) Rapid woodwind runs from CineWinds flutes and piccolos interlock with BBCSO clarinets to create a sense of swirling movement, adding detail and texture around the main orchestral melody.

🎺 Brass & Percussion (CineBrass & CinePercussion Core) Rich brass swells from CineBrass Sonore work alongside heavy percussive impacts, suspended cymbals, and timpanis to power the harmonic drive into the final choral climax.

Inside the Logic Pro session for the opening sequence of ‘Trail of Light’ 🎬✨ (Created for the Berlin International Film Scoring and Sound Design Competitions).

Scoring this dialogue-free, abstract animated short meant building a rich, evolving orchestration that travels from a single celestial spark right through to spiritual rebirth. Here is how the virtual instrument layers mapped onto the screen:

🎻 Strings (BBCSO Pro, Spitfire Albion One & OT Helix): BBCSO desk legatos provide refined individual detail, blended with OT Helix for raw pitch-bending textures. Albion One adds undulating pads, anchored by low-string stabs for dramatic dynamic weight.

🪈 Woodwinds (CineWinds Core & BBCSO Pro): CineWinds true legato piccolos, flutes, and oboes drive the sparkling high-register melodies, grounded underneath by BBCSO bass flutes, clarinets, and a rumbling contrabassoon.

🎺 Brass (CineBrass Core, Sonore & BBCSO Pro): CineBrass Sonore horns combined with BBCSO sections bring majestic swells and rich harmonic support as the creation sequence unfolds.

🥁 Percussion & Keyboards (CinePercussion Core): Bowed vibraphones, sustained cymbals, and delicate celeste create an ethereal, glassy shimmer for the opening spark of life.

Creating character themes that evolve as scenes unfold was one of the most rewarding parts of this process. To give the score its mysterious edge, much of the music is anchored around tritones, complemented by a recurring three-note leitmotif based on the word “fate” that emerges at three distinct, contrasting moments.

Here is the virtual instrument breakdown for the score:

Strings (BBCSO Pro & OT Layers):
To capture the vast expanse of the cosmos, I blended BBC Pro desk legatos for refined individual detail with Orchestral Tools’ Layers to thicken the overall harmonic texture. Rich low-string stabs provide dramatic dynamic accents, while delicate solo cello and violin passages from BBCSO Pro carry the score’s most intimate narrative moments.

Woodwinds (CineWinds via Musio & BBCSO Pro):
Woodwinds carry immense emotional weight in their upper register. Expressive True Legato piccolos, flutes, and oboes from CineWinds drive sparkling melodic lines, grounded underneath by BBCSO bass flutes, bass clarinets, and a rumbling contrabassoon for deep, earthy warmth.

Brass (CineBrass via Musio & BBCSO Pro):
CineBrass horn sections combined with BBCSO horn, trumpet, and trombone desks bring noble, majestic swells and rich harmonic support during key emotional shifts in the sequence.

Percussion & Keyboards (CinePercussion via Musio):
Bowed vibraphones, sustained suspended cymbals, and a delicate céleste add an ethereal, glassy shimmer to the opening cue, evoking the initial spark of life.Be sure to follow to find out more about the score and catch future Logic Pro breakdowns!
