Took a road trip to connect with my daughter @goodgraciious in Astoria Queens.

The plan was to surprise my son @things.josephoxley and his wife at their new coffee shop @muted.entity

I Absofreakinglutely love the intention that went into creating the layout minimalistic design aesthetic and community.

@muted.entity is a primitive coffee bar in Astoria, Queens, right off the N/W Broadway stop at 29-17 34th Ave.

@things.josephoxley is using manual equipment like the @strietmanespresso alongside beans from @flowerchild_coffeeroasting and @thoughtfulcoffeenyc. I tried a light roast from Thoughtful that had an almost tea-like quality - a nice contrast to the dark, burnt flavors elsewhere 🙌 the handmade ceramics by @magzipan adds the feeling of drinking a more delicate type of coffee. And if you’re in the mood for tea, they got you covered with @tezumitea 🔥

After popping up around NYC for the past few years, Muted Entity finally has a brick & mortar home 👍

I’ve heard about them for a while since they’re pretty well known in the NYC specialty coffee scene, but somehow never got to try them until now, and I’m glad I finally did!

The whole concept is built around a “slow bar” approach, treating coffee as a craft (which it should be!) rather than something to rush through. Everything is intentionally prepared by hand, from pour overs to even pulling the espresso shots manually. It’s definitely not your grab-and-go coffee experience, and that’s kinda the point 🙂‍↕️

The new space will serve pour overs, espresso drinks + teas like matcha from @tezumitea , hojicha & Yuzu Cascara 🍵 And for coffee, they’re currently using beans from @thoughtfulcoffeenyc & @flowerchild_coffeeroasting 🫡

What we tried:
☕️ Pour Over: Such a balanced, tasty cup with a really nice mouthfeel. I didn’t see the coffee packaging from @flowerchild_coffeeroasting , but I personally got strawberry, stone fruit & floral notes, and the cup became noticeably sweeter as it cooled down 👍

🥛 Flat White: So comforting for fall 🍂 It had this slightly boozy quality, which makes sense given the moutai tasting note, and finished with a nice fruity aroma that lingered in the nose 😌 from @thoughtfulcoffeenyc

🍵 Matcha Choux: This one was from @casajuliette.bakery and I’m not sure if they’ll carry it regularly, but perhaps the best matcha choux I’ve had recently 😭 The matcha cream was super balanced and not too sweet, so you could actually taste the matcha, while the shell had this slight crispness for contrast. And so satisfying when you take a big bite and let all that cream ooze out 🤤

They’re still working through the final details, so hours/opening may gradually roll out next week. Definitely follow @muted.entity for the latest updates before heading over!

If you’re into specialty coffee & teas and don’t mind slowing down a little for your cup, this is one to keep on your radar ☕️

LIMBIC 1.0 by @muted.entity at @versecafenyc. An intimate evening coffee omakase followed by an original art performance that transforms the pour-over ritual into a meditative, ambient sound bath. ☕️💆‍♂️

Such a unique way to appreciate the craft of brewing. I am fascinated when seemingly mundane touch points are re-interpreted to produce sonically interesting textures and compositions. I had the privilege of attending an earlier iteration of the experience, so it’s really cool to see what @things.josephoxley is able to come up with. Appreciate the invitation!! 🙏

Of course, the coffee shines as well…well past midnight. 🥴 ahaha Brews featured beans from @driftawaycoffee @thoughtfulcoffeenyc and Gesha from @flowerchild_coffeeroasting. Always a thoughtful curation!
