Of all days to introduce our production of The Thanksgiving Play, the calendar chose a pointed contrast: federally recognized as Columbus Day, here at Marquette we’re observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I saw Larissa FastHorse’s play on Broadway. Now I’m directing it with this Marquette company. And yes, that’s D’Arcy Carden in the carousel. I was extremely normal about meeting her. The play follows a group of teaching artists trying to make a Thanksgiving pageant. Their intentions are good. Their assumptions need some attention. We’ve started with the script, research, design conversations, community agreements, and a first devised exercise. We’re also watching a Peanuts Thanksgiving cartoon together, asking what version of this story felt familiar to us long before we entered this rehearsal room. Our production begins in a school assembly, with the troupe helping build that world, construction paper and all. The work keeps bringing us back to a deceptively simple question: whose story are we telling, and who gets to help tell it? Meet this company in the next slides. The Thanksgiving Play runs November 13–15 and 19–22 at Marquette’s Helfaer Theatre. Come see what we build. #TheThanksgivingPlay #MarquetteTheatre #MilwaukeeTheatre

I’ll always remember the journey of finding my footing with a character so different from myself—especially while tackling two different accents. A part of Selsdon will always be with me…or at least the good parts. 😅 Thank you to everyone involved (on stage and off) in making this show such a defining part of my college career.
