Yesterday, high school students participated in our annual Boo Boo Clinic, where students rotated around stations and got to learn basic first aid methods, procedures, treatments, and some trivia to expose them to the daily life of a physician! 🩹🩺 Thank you to the parents and students who attended! We also want to thank our medical students, K-12 Pathways Ambassadors, and supervisors for making this event a success! 🧑‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

Making back to school note-worthy ✏️🎒

A huge thank you to students of @muwcomindy, Forza Commercial Real Estate, Cork Medical, and @rehabmedicalinc for supporting our young people as they begin their fall semester at school.

Together, they boxed over 700 boxes filled with snacks, fidgets, and an encouragement card to bring young people comfort and motivation for the school year. For young people with lived experience in foster care, receiving a care package reminds them that there's a community behind them saying "you got this!"

Thank you again for uplifting young people so they start the school year with confidence 😁

ABOUT THE COVER ART

Shaira Patel is an OMS-II at Marian University's Tom and Julie Wood College of Medicine (MU-WCOM) whose creative journey is rooted in the intersection of anatomy and art. Her fascination with the human form began in high school through advanced sculpting, most notably evidenced by an anatomical hand that remains a fixture in her alma mater's halls. After a prolific period of commissioned acrylic work during her undergraduate years, Shaira stepped away from the canvas to focus on her medical training. She returned to her brushes during her second year of medical school, rediscovering art as both a vital reprieve from the rigors of studying and a unique lens through which to process her clinical education. Her current work blends anatomical precision with surrealism to tell stories of resilience, irony, and the human condition.

🏆 Creative Article of the Year 🏆

Congratulations to Elijah Liu, MS, OMS-III, and Erica Ausel, PhD! Their piece, "Reframing Neurodiversity in Medicine: A Medical Student's Perspective on Belonging, Barriers & Change," is Beyond the White Coat's Creative Article of the Year.

Blending lived experience with the research, this piece shows what neurodivergent students bring to medicine and the barriers they still face in training. It also calls on medical schools to build a more equitable learning environment for all students.

🏆 Research Article of the Year 🏆

Congratulations to Austin Layton, OMS-III; Lily House, OMS-II; Madison Lather, OMS-IV; Bianca McAravey, OMS-II; and Michael Burchett, DO! Their case report, "Recurrent Amyand Hernia After Prior Open Repair Managed With Laparoscopic TAPP and Appendectomy," is Beyond the White Coat's Research Article of the Year.

An Amyand hernia is a rare finding where the appendix is found inside an inguinal hernia sac. This case describes one found during repair of a recurrent hernia. It was managed safely with laparoscopic TAPP and appendectomy in a single operation, with no complications.
