Day 4 NZFW

Some of my favourite looks and moments throughout The @kaahuicollective Showcase.

Kāhui Collective was easily one of the shows that stayed with me most from @nzfashionwk

16 Indigenous designers, each bringing their own relationship to culture, whenua, whakapapa and Te Taiao into the room. There was so much to take in, but what I loved was that nothing felt like it needed to be explained or softened to make sense within a fashion context. It was allowed to exist fully on its own terms.

The clothing was strong, but it was the way fashion, waiata, taonga pūoro, performance and storytelling all sat together that gave the show its weight.

It felt like a very clear example of what Indigenous curation can look like when the culture isn’t treated as an addition to the fashion. It informs the entire experience.

Definitely one of my favourite shows from the week.

Don’t worry I still have so much to share on this show so make sure you’re following @thefashionaunties to keep updated

There was something quite serendipitous about how I ended up backstage styling Ūkaipō for @obsxlescence at New Zealand Fashion Week.

A chance meeting with @vinceropitini on another creative project turned into an invitation to work alongside him for his second @nzfashionwk showing, and his first since emerging from the graduate programme.

Ūkaipō speaks to home, belonging and the place we return to in order to reconnect with who we are. For Vince, that idea was deeply personal, and once I understood the story behind the collection, the styling language felt very natural.

There was a rawness to it that I loved. Driftwood became bags and bouquets. Yarn, torn fabric, and other natural materials were worked through the looks in a way that felt instinctive and grounded. My role was really about extending what was already there and helping bring that world together.

I also reached out to @baredfootwear Newmarket, who generously came on board to provide shoes for every model. We wrapped and embellished them with torn fabric so they felt connected to the collection, and the models had nothing but good things to say about how comfortable they were.

What I enjoyed most was how easy it was to work with Vince. There was trust, space to experiment, and a shared instinct for when something felt right.

Watching Ūkaipō come down the runway with @kaahuicollective made me incredibly proud of him, and grateful that a chance meeting turned into a new friendship and an opportunity to contribute to something so personal.

I loved the collection enough that I borrowed one of the looks for my own final day of Fashion Week.

Ngā mihi Vince for trusting me with your mahi.
