I am really proud of this piece. I finished it today.

This fiber art wool painting honors one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most unforgettable lost landmarks: "The Soldier" (also known as the "Sentinel" or "Lioness").

For years, this iconic freestanding clay and rock spire stood guard at Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark. Born from ancient glacial deposits of tightly packed sand, clay, and silt, the formation was slowly sculpted by time and tide. Superstorm Sandy in 2012 whittled the cliffs into a natural archway, which later collapsed in early 2014—leaving behind the singular, striking pillar that captivated so many photographers, locals, and visitors.

On the night of May 1–2, 2020, following severe surf and heavy rains, the beloved spire finally gave way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Created with layered wool fibers, this piece captures the texture, weight, and quiet grandeur of the coastline as it once was—a lasting tribute to the constantly evolving beauty of our island's dynamic shores.
