Birthmark, 2024 - The title image of my series and presentation, “Birthmark,” represents how being Palestinian is like having a marker at birth. You’re born with equal parts grief and empathy, reliance and resistance, compassion and pain, and strength and vulnerability. You’re born with a responsibility to your people, and a unmatched self-determination. The image was made in the summer of 2024 after months of watching the genocide unfold on our phones. That time made me confront and try to understand what it really meant for me to be Palestinian from New York. My friend @mws8 was experiencing similar emotions, and let me make this photo of him in his childhood home in the Bronx during a time of struggle in his life, as a way to represent our complicated, non-monolithic existences. Mohamad’s birthmark, which sits on his arm, leads the viewer’s eyeliner to the vulnerability in his eye. The image is layered on top of a vinyl landscape depicting livestock in Palestine, which imagines what the subject’s life would look life if his family had not been expelled from the West Bank.

Thank you Mohamad for letting me make this image of you. Birthmark, 2024 is on display at @MoMAps1, part of Greater New York 2026.
