POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My mum was the first few person to know that I had a tattoo. Her reaction was immediate:
“为什么要纹身？给你爸爸知道就惨了！他最讨厌人家纹身！好像 sum seng！”

But when my dad eventually found out, she was also the first to defend me. She told him off instead:
“Aiyoh! 还说你是得文化奖的艺术家！纹身也是一种艺术好吗？她喜欢就好！骂她做什么？”

That was my mama.

I had wanted this tattoo since the day I found out she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. I even paid deposits to a few artists, but in the end, I chickened out and never went through with it. Mainly because she was still alive then and somehow, it didn’t feel right. Some old people say it’s pantang.

A year after her passing, the feeling never left. So I finally did it, and asked my good friend Maxx to do the tattoo for me. The execution and style fit perfectly with my other tattoos, and I truly love it.

This reference photo was captured by my dad, and it’s one of my favourite childhood photos. It holds so much love and a moment we once shared. My parents may hate tattoos but to me, this is a small, quiet tribute to the one person who loved us unconditionally, and whom we miss every single day.
