It’s been a whole year since we got married, more than 7 and a half years since we’ve been together, and I couldn’t be happier with you. What advice would you give your college‑aged self? When I was asked to speak to students at my alma mater, this was the question I hoped to answer. It’s been ~6 years since I graduated, and after building a career around storytelling and story‑listening, these lessons keep showing up in my work:

🌱 If an opportunity doesn’t exist, create it.
In college, I spent hours perfecting an application for a research internship, only to get rejected. When I told an editor at my college newspaper, she encouraged me to pitch myself to be a communications intern instead, and it became the first of many times I created my own path.

🌀 Love the process as much as the final product.
It’s easy to get tied to outcomes, especially when you’re dreaming big. I’m learning to celebrate the work itself—sharing how and why I write, embracing wins, and learning from the moments that don’t go as planned.

📸 Be open to happy accidents.
I accidentally applied to work for my college newspaper, and I decided to run with it. It introduced me to the work of interview-based writing, which continues to be a part of my mission to lift as I climb through the stories I get to tell.

💬 Tell your story, even if it scares you.
During my first tech internship, impostor syndrome hit hard. A mentor encouraged me to share a recap I’d written in my notebook on LinkedIn. Posting it sparked years of personal essays, webinars, and posts like this one where I get to turn the mic and tell my own story too!

🎨 Create for yourself first.
Writing has been the thread connecting my favorite projects, even when my path didn’t make sense to others. Seeing myself as a strategic creative helped me find the story in everything.

🚀 Don’t be afraid to get caught trying.
I’ve never been perfect at anything, but I’m always willing to try—and to ask for help from the creatives and small business owners who inspire me.
