POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Okay, folks. I’m finally putting fingers to keyboard and sharing my thoughts about the overwhelming experience of touring with Les Miserables. This is my serious post. Don’t worry. There will be a funny one too. Trying the caption thing so swipe through to read the whole thing.

It’s a running joke in theatre that you can pick one of three things, and two of three if you’re really lucky: Money, resume, fulfillment. Les Mis has given me all three in spades.

There’s something indescribable about the silence during Bring Him Home or the roar after One Day More that I have never felt on any other stage with any other show.

However, I would be remiss to give all the credit to the material. The guttural feelings of the audience extend to all of us onstage, backstage, and in the pit.

You have to be a little insane to drag an 11 truck tour of a massively complicated show with a company of over 80 people around the continent. I always describe our company as a circus. Kids, babies, pets, friends, hobbies, cookware, instruments, vehicles (scooters, bikes and one-wheels included) plus nebulizers, humidifiers, sleep masks, more drugs than a pharmacy, Chinese herbal remedies, electrolytes, and so many water bottles. It is a daunting task and it works because of our community.

I started jokingly and then seriously referring to our tour as a traveling commune, and it caught on. Part of why touring is so addicting is that you get to embody the ideals of community. You’re trapped with your 80 coworkers in hotels and airbnbs and busses and planes and theaters. Do you like everybody? No. Do you crave alone time? Absolutely. But you are where you are and you make the best of it.

Community isn’t about all being best friends or “family” as our capitalist bosses like to throw around. Community is supporting and embracing the people around you despite your differences.

It’s intoxicating to be able to ask our WhatsApp for a stick of butter and have three people offer one up. To know that someone has a self tape set up you can borrow. To always have someone to walk home with even if you’re not that friendly. For the community to function, everyone has to opt in and make the b

2 weeks I’ll never forget. 🤍

Whistle Down the Wind changed me in ways I’m still trying to put into words. Getting to play Swallow, work alongside some of the most talented people I’ve ever met, and be part of something so special was an absolute dream.

Thank you to everyone who believed in me, supported me, and made this experience unforgettable. My heart is so full. Until next time. 🕊️ @noah.a.buchholz @itsjdixon @elenashaddowofficial @a_norms @mya.rena @katalinadale @thejohnmcginty @raylyaquino @adamerawlings @alonajanerobbins @alstonjamesrobbins @adidougherty @titilxyo @jsuemrtinez @catchrosa @jeremy.lee.stone @joeysiya @taylorbrinaesings @dylantheon.official @emjayroa

This one is gonna take a while to process…

I just got home after a 2 week workshop of @andrewlloydwebber’s Whistle Down The Wind with @newyorkstageandfilm and @deafwest.

It was a remarkable experience, and unlike anything I’ve been a part of before, for many reasons. I was thrilled to get the call from @djkurs and to reunite with @deafwest after our work together on the Spring Awakening revival. I jumped at the opportunity to join @bill.rauch.pac (recent Tony winner for @catsjellicleball) to collaborate on bringing this story to life under an entirely new lens with both deaf and hearing actors.

The team assembled was one-of-a-kind and brought a level of collaboration you rarely experience. There are too many to name, but a few that made this experience extra special.

The ASL Choreography team- @jeremy.lee.stone @catchrosa @joeysiya
Who brought a level of care and specificity to the language that is rarely seen with hearing performers. I loved the opportunity to share what the music was doing and how that influenced their translations. It was a beautiful collaboration- more on that soon!

Special shoutout to my long time friend, @elenashaddowofficial, who I grew up doing theater with and this workshop marked our first time working together professionally. And to my new friend @itsjdixon- always an honor!

Thank you to my killer band for bringing their A-game and helping me bring this score to life. @here_is_ben @johnkengla @dominiclamorte @d.stoltz23 @maggy.with.a.y

And lastly- this workshop provided the opportunity to work with my daughter, Pax for the first time. She auditioned, submitted her own tape, and earned this role! And she showed up every day like a pro, proving that she was right where she belonged. Learning music and ASL at the speed of light and blowing everyone away whilst doing so. I couldn’t be more proud. I only hope this is the first of many times we get to share the stage.

I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the future of these workshops is never known. But I’m proud of what we created over the last two weeks and I remain hopeful that audiences will one day get a chance to witness this very special show.
