What a beautiful evening for music, friendship and electrolyte shots (really) in the name of The 10.15 Project. Phil’s was a gracious host, the silent auction items donated by local businesses were snapped up and Soleil Bashale put on a show!
And with that, we’ve surpassed the fundraising goal - still with two weeks before beginning the 480-mile run across North Dakota! Incredible. Meanwhile, we sparked more (hopefully healing) conversations about pregnancy and infant loss. Full heart, for sure. 💜

I ran a half marathon last week! Still doesn’t seem real as a 47-year-old who has never really been a runner. But I didn’t come this far to only come this far.
The next big marker in my journey with The 10.15 Project is Oct. 2 - and this one is a celebration. “Terry’s Sendoff Soirée featuring Soleil” is a happy hour/concert/silent auction/fundraiser at the legendary Phil’s Pub. I suspect it will help me hit my goal of raising $10k for others impacted by pregnancy and infant loss. (We’re so close!)
More than that, it’s an excuse to bring people together and have fun on a fall Friday night - to say thanks for all your support to this point. There’s no cover charge. Drinks are cheap. It won’t be fancy. But it should be a blast in a middle-age kind of way.
Then in a couple of weeks I’ll leave home to run a four-day relay across North Dakota. 😬 We’ll figure that out later. Hope to see you Oct. 2!

Reflections on my first half marathon - the @sfmarathon.
1. Proud of my discipline. I ran and hydrated and fueled the way I’ve been training. Same audiobook, even.
2. The human body is amazing. People of all ages, shapes and running styles doing a difficult thing both individually and together.
3. Every cheer from a familiar face gave me a boost. Truly.
4. I made a cornhole shot at Fawick Park without breaking stride!
5. Best sign was held by a priest near the Cathedral: Come follow me … on Strava. 🤣
6. More work to do with the real goal - @the10.15project - coming up in mid October. I lift Monday and run 16 miles Tuesday. But this experience will boost my confidence.

Just like that it’s Sioux Falls Half Marathon week!
Takes me back to when we used this event as a platform to raise money for Team Tiny Miracles, shortly after the premature births of our twin girls. That was in conjunction with the 5K. All these years later, I’m back to do a half marathon - the longest run of my life - as part of my prep for the The 10.15 Project in mid-October. Running events are awesome ways to build community and support people.

This is what infant loss looks like.
Sixteen years ago, my wife and I lost a daughter - Breley - at two days old. She was born at 24 weeks and died due to prematurity. Her twin sister, Kailey, survived, facing years of life-threatening and chronic health issues.
So did her older sister, Mya, who was 6 at the time and suddenly had a broken heart.
We’ll never forget the feelings of that day. Helpless and surreal. Our child was dying right there in front of us.
I share this image all these years later for awareness. Pregnancy and infant loss impacts so many people yet until recently it’s been largely unspoken. We decided then - and reaffirm now - to help others face this devastating situation by sharing our lived experiences, openly and honestly. And, yes, that honesty also has helped us process our trauma. That’s why we’ve done the interviews and wrote a book and are involved in The 10.15 Project.
Thank you for seeing us; thank you for bringing pregnancy and infant loss out of the shadows. 💜
