🌷2023 Flowers from the Farm Conference - Plot to Profit

Flower farming is a business not a hobby. Every one of the 320 flower farmers at last weekend’s conference is an entrepreneur, a multi-tasking, über-creative small business owner. The conference theme of Plot to Profit focused on the essentials for running a sustainable, profitable flower business wherever you are and however big your plot.

When members of Flowers from the Farm get together the flower farming chat is something to behold! Talk of seed germination rates, irrigation methods, dig or no-dig, top-performing varieties and, above all, compost is off the chart.

Members - new and old - are exceptionally collaborative and supportive of each other, sharing their skills, expertise and experience freely and generously, forming friendships and business partnerships in the process. Some have also shared their knowledge in book form and we are ridiculously proud of our published flower farmers including @stokesayflowers @milliproust @plantpassion @botanical_tales and @francesandrose who were signing copies at the conference.

🌷Today’s Conference Tips at a Glance

@carolsiddorn @millpondflowerfarm @plantpassion of The Business of Selling Flowers recommend:

🌿 Grow what grows well and what grows easily on YOUR plot
🌿 Sell all your flowers - if it’s not picked, it’s a waste of your time, money and effort
🌿 Prioritise your physical and mental health. You are your business’s biggest asset: if you are ill or injure yourself, who will be left to do the work?
🌿 Maximise productivity and efficiency. Spot and eliminate time wasters eg staking too late, looking for tools, watering and moving hoses, weeding edges

@myflowerpatch and @wilzinniabristol advise:

🌿 Don’t try to grow everything. Grow with your ideal customer in mind. Collaborate with fellow flower farmers on the rest.
🌿 Be creative and efficient with space eg grow or bring on crops in crates
🌿 Don’t be sentimental about crops going over - pull them up and have the next plants ready to go in
🌿 Plant crops together eg narcissi under sedums, dahlias after tulips, hellebores under shrubs
