Holding this cast in my heart… ❤️‍🩹 🎱

Octet. The hardest part of playing a role in new work is the investment. We invest our time, our hearts, our efforts — we artists are tasked with pouring everything we can into something that is constantly being reshaped, retooled and built around us to the point that we leave our DNA, our fingerprints imbedded in the piece — and we do it with no guarantee that we will ever see the fruits of our labor. More often than not when working on developmental projects an actor can feel like a stepping stool, especially when the project moves onto a more commercial venture, leaving behind the artists who put forth their strongest efforts for what is very little money, putting our jobs, lives and careers on the back burner.

On a personal note, I turned down auditions, jobs and other gigs at just the mere opportunity that there would be another run (namely, a West End run that never came to be). Ya live and ya learn, I guess, but honestly I don’t regret it because I firmly believed in Octet. I believed in it the second I saw the breakdown, taking a bus from Baltimore to NYC and back on a show day just to AUDITION for the original production. I saw words on a page that resonated so deeply with me, it felt like Dave Malloy had been reading my mind.

I’m beyond happy Octet will reach more eyes and ears. It’s a brilliant piece with dense, poignant content and a message for all of us who live in these current times, bound slavishly to the notifications on our screens. The film cast is a literal Who’s Who of the industry — more than fitting performers who will undoubtedly be able to drive the piece home.

But… make no mistake: the show was already on third base. The blueprint already exists. The material already trialed. Words on a page already brought to life by a group of some of the best people I’ve ever met under the brilliant, imaginative, resourceful direction of Annie Tippe.

I’ll be a bawling audience member when this film makes its premiere; proud. But this one’s gonna sting for a while only because I convinced myself that the work would stand alone and that recognizable faces aren’t always a necessity. Not these days…

Theatre is a collaborative, community-driven art form. It amplifies marginalized voices, sheds light on critical issues, and challenges our comfort zones. It’s a force for progress, and we need it now more than ever.
