When you have a kid, people tell you all kinds of things. How to nurse, why *not* to nurse, how to get your baby to sleep, how to look MILF-hot postpartum 🙄…what they don't EVER tell you is that when your child is ready to go to school…you will find yourself one evening in a classroom crowded with strangers. All parents of *other* children who are the same age as your kid: THAT IS THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE IN COMMON. Primo was 4 years old when this happened for the first time - I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that these adults were all of child-bearing years! There were Moms who looked barely out of high school and Dads in there who were in their 60s? 70s? David and I were in our late-30s at the time and I didn’t want anything to do with these people! Not chic! Not cute! They all seemed like straight-edge-sheep! But as the kids got older, and students filtered in and out of Primo’s class at the Honolulu Waldorf School, there finally seemed to be a crop of parents who we really vibed with.

These Moms are two gems among them. When our kids met, they were 7-10 years old. I was a public servant, Raquel was a medical resident, and Michelle was a physical therapist. Today, our children are 20/21 years old. I’m an independent international curator, Raquel is a stomach-less physician (!), and Michelle is on the verge of launching a genetic counseling non-profit by and for BIPOC individuals (!).

When you have kids, what no one tells you is that you will meet other parents who will become lifelong friends, who will become family. You will meet Moms who are nothing like you, but who you admire, who know what you don’t, who Mom in ways that look different to you, doing the hard work of raising their children into sensitive, thoughtful, critical, engaged citizens of the world.

Grateful to be Momming side by side with these two powerhouse beings.
