🇿🇲 FROM MINERAL WEALTH TO NATIONAL PROSPERITY

President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for increased investment, local participation and value addition in the mining sector highlights an important priority for Zambia: ensuring that our mineral wealth translates into tangible economic opportunities for our people.

As the country works towards producing three million metric tonnes of copper annually by 2031 under the broader Grow Zambia Agenda, the focus must extend beyond production targets to building a competitive domestic economy that creates jobs, strengthens local enterprises, transfers skills and expands opportunities across the mining value chain.

For Zambian businesses, this presents an opportunity to position themselves as active participants in the country’s economic transformation. From supplying goods and services to providing technical expertise, supporting local processing and forming strategic partnerships, there is significant potential for businesses that are prepared to meet industry demands.

At Afritandwa Consultancy, we recognise that achieving these ambitions requires deliberate collaboration, capable institutions, prepared businesses and strategic partnerships that connect local potential to real economic opportunities.

We commend the emphasis on productive investment and greater participation by Zambians. The true measure of growth lies not only in what we extract from the ground, but also in the businesses we build, the skills we develop, the jobs we create and the value we retain within our economy.

Growing Zambia means positioning Zambians to participate in, contribute to and benefit from the opportunities our nation creates.

I have seen many of my fellow artists share their sentiments about the recently concluded @StanbicMusicFestival and other major events that have taken place in Zambia over the years.

The concerns about sound quality, payment disparities between local and international artists, and the opportunities given to local musicians are all valid. However, I believe our focus should go beyond complaining. We should also ask ourselves: How do we grow to command the same value that visiting artists command?

Instead of only fighting event organisers over the issues listed above, let’s challenge them to include workshops and masterclasses for local artists as part of their agreements with visiting acts.

There is so much we can learn from these musicians. Many are highly trained and have studied at some of the most competitive institutions in the world. Our Republican President, His Excellency @HakaindeHichilema, always says, “School is the best equaliser.” The knowledge and experience these visiting artists bring could help us improve our craft, professionalism, performances, and understanding of the music industry.

A few years ago, we hosted Joe Thomas and Brian McKnight, yet local artists barely had an opportunity to interact with them, which has happened with a lot of other visiting artists. Joe Thomas and his band were in Zimbabwe last year and conducted a workshop with local musicians prior to their concert. So why can’t we have the same opportunities here in Zambia?

To our event organisers: please give local artists the opportunity to interact with and learn from these visiting musicians. You can even charge us for these workshops. We need them!

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts, @mysazambia, how can we make this a mandatory requirement at major international music events?

Fellow artists, let’s move away from the blame game. Let us demand better, but also take responsibility for improving ourselves.

The effort must start with us. If we grow, our value will grow with us, and the industry will ultimately benefit.

Let’s learn, improve, and build a Zambian music industry that can compete on the world stage.
