Suede Day 10/16

I share this info several times a year but it’s one of my favorite parts of the evolution of the Puma Suede.

2001 Puma Original Suede - Suede Original

Through out the 90s the shape and details of the Puma suede had evolved overtime and by 2001 Puma was itching for a return of the shape of the original 1970s Clyde. Unfortunately, they still didn’t hold the rights to use Clyde’s name so they did the next best thing, they made it anyways but without the name. For a brief period from 2001-2003 Puma produced what they referred to as the Original Suede. A model that was surprisingly close in to the OG Made in Yugoslavia 70s & 80s Clyde/ Suede.

There seemed to be some confusion at the time as to what to call similar models but with slightly different shapes or materials. This model was originally advertised as the ‘Future Suede’ & sometimes are labeled as Suede Basket but | think Original Suede is the perfect name.

ALEXANDER JOHN × PUMA SUEDE “G - TAG”
- Made In America Festival

Released in 2021 for Jay Zs Roc Nation Made in America Festival. The primary colors on the pair aren’t just a nod to Festival but are also representative of Alexander John’s own blood, sweat and tears put into his journey as an artist. While the gold pays homage to rewards reaped from following your dreams.

Each “G-Tag” Suede is completely embellished by hand. From the hand cut heat applied vinyl, to the hand made tag on the side. The sole/midsole is dipped in liquid rubber that peels off over time. Made in limited numbers Each pair is a 1 of 1.

SneakerFreaker × Puma “Shark Bait” Friends & Family,
1/50, 2013

13 years ago SneakerFreaker released just 50 pairs of what would become Pumas most sought after pair of all time. Turquoise Terror Blue w/ Shark Skin texture, accents of black and treasure chest gold on the sole. This pair has it all and came with it all. The oversized packaging includes a poster, a limited beanie, 3 sets of laces in a sharkskin pouch, SneakerFreaker Magazine Issue 29 and of course the gold shark tooth keychains.

This pair came to me several years ago thanks to one of my best mates, from Down Under, @lllladnek .

Suede Day 10-16-2026

When I think about the Puma Suede I can’t help but dwell on all the History behind it. All the movements. All the communities and individuals it has brought together. No matter how you tell the time line…

In his own words Tommy Smith famously raised his fist at the 1968 Olympics - Puma Suede (Crack) in hand - as “A cry for Freedom and For Human Rights” adding “We had to be seen because we couldn’t be heard”. — COMMUNITY.

In 1973, Walt “Clyde” Frazier led the NY Knicks to a NBA Championship - wearing the Puma Clyde (Suede) - transforming the social identity and spirit of New York City during deeply challenging era. — COMMUNITY.

In the 1980s Bboys, Breakers, Poppers, Writers took to the streets across the United States with their crews wearing the Puma Suede while at the same time in Europe Bboys and early Hip Hop fans where emulating that same style across the pond in Puma States(Suede). — COMMUNITY.

In the ‘90 the Puma Suede was cemented in multiple subcultures. Hip Hop, Skate, Grunge. —COMMUNITY.

The list never ends; Forever Fresh, The Shadow Society, We Are Puma, Puma Bros….
—COMMUNITY.

Yesterday, my dude, @atldrcfox swung into town, toured #MyPumaArchive, and hand delivered me a care package and Puma Suedes on behalf of @puma & @pumabros so I could be fresh for Suede Day.
On 10/16 Community members will gather in ATL, NYC and LA for a live photoshoot 📸 . If you are in one of those cities reach out to @suededay1016 for details. If not please still support by making a video saying what the Puma Suede means to you or take & post photos on 10/16 in your favorite pair.

No One Wants to Settle for an L…

👟- Made in 1991 Puma Milage.

Yes, I spelled that right, Milage, with an L. If this was a Puma Mirage - with an R - I could give you one of my usual History Dissertation. I could tell you how the model was originally released exactly 50 years ago in 1976. I could discussed how it was engineered strictly for speed and athletic performance in track and field. About how the originally 70s model was a spike with a nylon upper reinforced with Premium Suede. We could fast forward to the running boom of the early ‘90s when Puma released the model as the staple to its new jogging and leisure line. Unfortunately, this is a Puma Milage - With an L. Also released in the early ‘90s. A sleeker, faster companion shoe to the Mirage line. If it does has a similar origin story dating back 50 years to the ‘70 I havn’t heard it 🤷‍♂️. What I do know is that the running boom of the early ‘90s is back. I do know that everytime the Mirage has been retro’d that it’s been a success. Let’s give some other similar models a chance…

@puma Who is Ready to give the Puma Milage a W?
