I was designing interfaces this am, and I pulled this image from@my desktop. I was sitting in my studio, in my comfy chair, with air conditioning and realized that only 10 months ago I was riding through Africa with my best friend @joelestopa in intense heat, sweating our soul off as we traversed Zambia on our way to Namibia. This was a hard and testing day for the both of us, but also we were in perfect adventure synch with each other. In that moment I wanted the day to be over with. Today I would teleport myself to that very moment with a smile on my face. In the end, moments and days like this are the ones that stay etched in your memory, and no great adventure is filled with easy days.m, perspective is everything.

Do you know the history of the airhead engine?

“At the end of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles demanded that BMW cease production of aircraft engines. To remain in business, the company began producing small industrial engines (along with farm equipment, household items and railway brakes).

In 1920, BMW M2B15 flat-twin petrol engine was released. Despite being designed as a portable industrial engine, the M2B15 was also used by several motorcycle manufacturers, including for the 1920–1923 Victoria KR1 and the 1920–1922 Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFw) Helios motorcycles.

BMW merged with Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1922, and the BFw Helios became the starting point for the first BMW motorcycle.

Released in 1923, the BMW R 32 used a 486 cc (29.7 cu in) flat-twin petrol engine, which was longitudinally-mounted to eliminate the cooling problems of the transversely mounted engine in the Helios. This engine with 6.3 kW (8.5 hp), resulting in a top speed of 95 to 100 km/h (59 to 62 mph).

At a time when many motorcycle manufacturers used total-loss oiling systems, the new BMW engine featured a recirculating wet sump oiling system with a drip feed to roller bearings; a design which BMW used until 1969. The R 32 also started the tradition of shaft drive, which was used on all BMW motorcycles until 1994.”

There you have it. What should have been an air cooled airplane engine, was brilliantly repurposed into some of the most beautiful motorcycles out there, in my humble opinion.

Delivered today after 4 months traveling from South Africa by sea. After uncreating them it started raining, and while I was watching it sit on the sidewalk under the rain, I realized that it was today when the African journey had bee completed.

A sequence of memories that connect more with the sensorial and less with the anecdotal, the forward motion, the motivation, the goals. A friendship that has given me so much in my life, an adventure with all colors of the emotional spectrum. Mixed feelings on this cloudy spring day.

I cry as I type, overwhelmed with flashes of the past. I think about memory and presence. How reality change yes with time and context.

What a journey. ✨✨

I love this picture that Joel took after we got the bike unstuck. The bucolic palm trees landscape, the clean blue sky and my nasty mud-covered riding suit. Even though I might look like I’m angry with the situation, I’m not. I’m just tired, half wet, sweaty and quite hot and ready to get to our destination, clean my clothes and myself in a long shower and have a beer to close the day’s adventures.

Finding a truck to go to Lilongwe (the capital) wasn’t as easy as some locals told me. Even though we seemed to have locked one in just a couple of hours after starting our search, the owner of the truck keeps rising the price every 6 hours, knowing that we were desperate and that there were not that many options. Just the attitude put me off and I started looking for a different option. After a few dead-end conversations we found this truck.

Thankfully the crew at our hotel was invested in our problem and they all showed up at 6:30am to pull the bike on the truck. Ramps are not a needed device for the local motorcycles Boda Boda which weight probably 80kg and any two man can handle.

The first question was if it was ok to carry the bike on its side. Even thought I know this is how all bikes are carried on a truck, I bursted our laughing and said “No”, very seriously. I realized quickly that none of the 10 men have ever seen a bike standing just by the use of two ratcheting tie downs pulling from the forks. So I took charge of the operation while they all looked at me skeptically. Once the bike was standing up and was solidly attached everyone though I just performed magic.

From Brooklyn to Paris, Barcelona to Greece, then flown to Kemya. Kenya to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and to the dirt roads of Tanzania. Having completely disassembled and rebuilt this motorcycle from scratch makes this journey even more sweet. Also allows me to test every decision I’ve made while building the bikes and make incremental changes in products for @mythmotor and also it has given me a few new ideas.
