Book review: Find your work verse.

Find Your Work Verse by Michèle Duval and Dan Negroni focuses on helping Gen Z find work that matches their interests, skills, and values. It encourages young people to choose meaningful careers, seek flexibility, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and continue learning. While reading the book, I was able to relate to some of its ideas and experiences, as they reflected my own thoughts and feelings about work, career choices, and the future. It helped me think about what I truly want from my career and reminded me that finding the right path is a personal journey.

That’s one of the lessons I’ve really learnt along the way. The most important thing to develop yourself, your skills, your pathway and your networks is to show up and do the work.

It sounds quite simple. It isn’t.

All of my work now is speaking, training, workshops - the things I really want to be doing. But it didn’t arrive by itself. It’s come from continually coming back to myself and figuring out what works for me and what matters to me.

Nobody taught me that when I started working. But @myworkverse has so many of the lessons it took me 20 years to learn!

I decided very early on I was gonna do it my own way, and learn a whole bunch of skills along the way.

20 years of a portfolio career later, I would say the showing up mattered more than the plan.

And here’s a little sneak peek at my handwritten notes from the beginning of Find Your Workverse by Michelle Duvall and Dan Negroni.

As you can probably see, a lot of these aren’t just quotes copied from the book. They’re my own thoughts, questions, reactions, and connections as I’m reading.

I’m constantly thinking about how these ideas connect to my own life and work, but also how they might be useful for my students, fellow teachers, and other lifelong learners.

That’s a big part of how I use CARE when I read. I’m not only asking, What does the author say? I’m asking, What do I think about this? What does it connect to? And what could I eventually do with it?

Right now, these pages are still very much thinking in progress, which is kind of the point. 📓

💡 The future of work will not be built by people who wait to be told every next step.

I’m currently reading Find YourWorkverse @myworkverse : Gen Z’s Playbook to Thrive at Work. With AI. With Humans. With Purpose. by Michelle Duval, Dan Negroni, and Coach Marlee.

The book describes your “Workverse” as the personal ecosystem created by what energizes you, how you think and solve problems, and what you value. It also explores how people can develop stronger human skills, work with AI as a teammate rather than a threat, and build careers aligned with purpose.

One line stopped me:

💡 “Hesitation is the killer of progress.”

Recently, I reconnected with Alex Kahl, a high school friend from David Douglas High School whom I had not seen in years. We talked about how many young people hesitate to step forward, ask questions, or solve problems independently.

But I do not think we can simply blame them.

Sometimes hesitation develops because of helicopter parenting and helicopter teaching. When adults provide every answer, organize every task, and remove every obstacle, children may become excellent at following instructions without developing confidence in their own judgment.

The classroom should be a sandbox: a lower-stakes place where students can experiment, make decisions, be wrong, and learn from what happens.

This is also where I see a connection to the CARE Method:

1️⃣Clarify: What am I trying to understand or accomplish?
2️⃣Articulate: What do I currently think or notice?
3️⃣Refine: What am I missing, and what should I test?
4️⃣Execute: What meaningful step can I take now?

AI makes this even more important. It can instantly provide instructions, plans, and polished answers. But when AI becomes the starting point for every decision, it may reinforce the same dependency we are trying to overcome.

The goal is not to act recklessly.

It is to build enough confidence, judgment, and self-awareness to move forward without always waiting for permission.
