Did you know this Metal Mario Fact?

😱 For years, we thought Metal Mario was reflecting the world around him, but the truth is much cooler (and a total genius programming hack).

In this 15-second breakdown, we dive into Pixeltology to reveal that those "reflections" aren't real-time renders at all. Instead, Nintendo used a technique called Environment Mapping. The "reflection" you see is actually a static texture wrapped around Mario’s model! 🤯

Since the Nintendo 64 couldn't handle real-time ray tracing or complex reflections, developers used this clever trick to make us think he was metallic. It’s one of the most iconic visual illusions in retro gaming history.

👇 JOIN THE DEBATE
Did you realize this was a fake reflection when you were a kid, or are we just blowing your mind right now? Drop a "🍄" in the comments if you still play Mario 64!
