September 30th is now observed as the National Day of Rememberance for the surviors of the US Indian Boarding Schools and Canadian Residential Schools.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day take some time to sit with these facts.

We didn’t just take the land. We took their children. We took their languages. We took their identity. We took their heritage.

On days like today when you wonder why we observe yet another “national day of” it’s vital to remember the why. Our history and national legacy is intwined with indigenous history and recognizing that along with all the resulting complications and consequences is the why.

Story time with aunty Tanáǧidaŋ Tó Wíŋ, a Dakota/Ojibwe author out of East St Paul, Minnesota. 20 copies of each book will be given away during the reading, please register to guarantee a book during the reading! This event honors and remembers the children and survivors of residential boarding schools across the United States & Canada. Every generation of Natives has been impacted by the boarding schools & what a responsibility it is to choose to heal with all the generations. We saw so many of our children out there sharing space & getting active! It is an honor to hold & curate space that brings our community together ❤️

Jose Griego, you are remembered!

Truth and reconciliation are just white mans English words. Often with no meaning by the very slow changes and only on a single day, once a year. For some- we can’t put down the orange shirt.

Hard truth- my family and many others are still in a sort of limbo of finding out the true history of our kin.

Detribalized by the very system that allocates belonging and tribal identity for countless others. The government doesn’t have to eradicate us- they taught us how to police ourselves and each other with federal recognition. Small dick measuring I call it.

My indigeneity is older than tokenized colonial performance.

Orange Shirt Day Vigil and walk at Powderhorn Park tonight to honor the Indian residential "school" survivors and those who never made it home to our families and community.

The US federal government financed more than 400 Indian boarding "schools" with the stated goal of assimilating, "civilizing", and "Americanizing" Native children into Western society by stripping them of their languages culture, kinship, identity and personhood.

I heard about #zitkalasa a few years ago from a Quaker scholar researching “#indianboardingschools”. Many of the white Americans involved in the schools saw them as a more peaceful policy than the bloody “Indian Wars” of the time. Today we see the forced transfer of children in the UN Genocide Convention. The “liberal” or “moderate” response to genocide was separating #nativeamerican children from their parents, cutting their hair, and punishing them for speaking their language and practicing their religion. In 1900 the #dakota woman Zitkala-sa began writing in The Atlantic and Harper’s about surviving this kind of boarding school and being called a “pagan.” “…the voice of the Great Spirit is heard in the twittering of birds, the rippling of mighty waters, and the sweet breathing of flowers.” #orangeshirtday

Every Child Matters. 🧡

Today, I'm wearing orange in remembrance of the Indigenous children who were forcibly taken from their families and sent to Boarding and Residential Schools. For the children who never made it home, the survivors who did, their families, and the generations who continue to carry this history today.

Earlier this month, I got to join relatives here in Tucson for the 6th Annual @rising_hearts Every Child Matters Remembrance 5K. 🍃

Praying with our feet. Running for those who cannot. Sharing the good medicine that comes from running, remembering, and being in community together.

And today, we wear orange. 🧡

September 30 is the National Day of Remembrance for US Indian Boarding Schools.

For generations, Native children were taken from their families and placed in government- and church-run institutions where their languages, cultures, and identities were stripped away. Many endured trauma that continues to impact our Tribal communities today.
