Long before scent could be digitally diffused, it flowed through tubing beneath theater seats, controlled by a core machine known as the Smell Brain.

We are delighted to exhibit original illustrations by Nadia Roden (@nadia.roden), created for the documentary “In Glorious Smell-O-Vision!” (2019). They depict inventor Hans Laube and his Smell-O-Vision scent-dispensing system for “Scent of Mystery” (1960): a mechanical marvel that funneled smells throughout the cinema, timed to onscreen action.

Roden’s hand-drawn animations conjure the mechanical wonder (and optimism) of the Smell-O-Vision era. Her wider body of work spans animation, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, and has appeared everywhere from HBO to Sesame Street. Here, her figures and tubing twist with playfulness, wonder, and a whiff of the surreal.

On view (and for sale) as part of “Her Scent of Mystery,” August 14–September 20 at Olfactory Art Keller (@olfactory_art_keller).

Her Scent of Mystery
Aug. 14 – Sept. 20
Olfactory Art Keller, NYC

This August, Olfactory Art Keller invites you to inhale a vanished world. “Her Scent of Mystery” uncovers the strange and forgotten history of “Scent of Mystery,” the perfume created for the 1960 Smell-O-Vision film of the same name, made for Elizabeth Taylor’s elusive character, Sally Kennedy.

Conserved by Jas Brooks (@jas_x_flowers) and Tammy Burnstock (@inglorious_smellovision), this once-lost fragrance has been preserved and studied. Drawing from both the original oxidized perfume (by Raoul Pantaleoni) and historical accounts, perfumer Marissa Zappas (@marissazappas) has crafted a new interpretation through chemical analysis and creative reconstruction, evoking what the film’s novelization described as “the girl at the far end of the rainbow.” The perfume is presented in a bespoke flacon by Mark Eliott (@markeliottglass) and a case by Luke Scheppers.

The exhibition traces the fragrance’s curious journey from cinematic plot point to unrealized Schiaparelli product, with archival materials including press photographs, booklets, and more, alongside original illustrations by Nadia Roden (@nadia.roden) from documentary “In Glorious Smell-O-Vision: The True Story of the Godfather of Scented Cinema” and scents from “Scent of Mystery” revival events.

“Her Scent of Mystery” reveals how perfume, persona, and projection briefly collided on screen: from Elizabeth Taylor’s investment in “Scent of Mystery” to its lingering afterimage in scent history today.

Admission is free. Bottles will be available via @olfactory_art_keller and Snivure (Jas’s upcoming website).

Cooking gets people together and the left overs are stories that live forever. My mother passed away when I just turned 12 and the only way I could meet her again was through the people she met and the stories she left behind.

In Beirut I remember finding a book by Claudia Roden to discover that she had included two of my mother’s favorite recipes; Fattet Batingan and Riz 3a djaj! My two favorites dishes too!

Many years later while doing my masters at the Royal College of Art, I took the opportunity to invite her to give a talk about the Middle East indirectly through food. The talk was a success and it was the beginning of my career in discovering Arab Pop art. The rest was history!

Watch this reel as it reveals her encounter with my mother at The Ritz and the superb posters created by the famous Armenian artist Hawarian back in Beirut in 1992!

On that note, you can spot a Virgo from a mile away, my mother included!
