Top 10 Tips: How to Ride a Stage Race Your Teammate Will Never Forget

(...lets hope you'll be forgiven)

1. Day One: Establish Dominance.
The first climb isn’t about pacing — it’s about power. Attack early, ride off the front, and glance back dramatically. Let your teammate know who’s boss before they start getting ideas.

2. The Wind is Your Friend (and Your Partner’s Problem).
On windy flats, resist the temptation to lead. Drafting is a science — and you’re merely applying physics. You’ll save 25% of your energy, which you can wisely invest in attacking again later.

3. Lighten Up (Your Own Load).
Tools, plugs, bombs, nutrition — all dead weight. If your team decides to carry spares, be a true collaborator: nominate your partner as “Head of Logistics.”

4. Encourage Through Honesty.
Should your teammate struggle, remind them they should have trained harder. It’s called accountability, and it builds character (mostly theirs).

5. Mechanical? Find Shade.
If your partner punctures or drops a chain, don’t overheat waiting on the side of the trail. Cruise ahead to the nearest shady spot, hydrate, and supervise the repair from a comfortable distance.

6. Tent Etiquette 101.
Shower first. Always. Then spread your damp cycling kit across their bed — they’ll understand. It’s called sharing.

7. Rest Like a Pro.
Sleep in. Skip breakfast if you must. Five minutes late to the start chute adds drama, not time penalties.

8. Technical Sections: Be Supportive.
When your partner hesitates on a descent, sit close behind and offer firm encouragement — shout helpful things like, “Let go of the brakes!” or “Commit!” The volume of your voice equals the depth of your care.

9. The Hero Push.
When spectators line the course, rest your hand on your teammate’s back and give a noble shove. This tells everyone you’re strong, selfless, and absolutely not the weak link.

10. Pain is a Privilege.
Never admit it if you’re suffering. Keep the pace, hide the grimace, and wait. If your partner cracks first, they’ll be the one calling for mercy — not you. You’ll retain the alpha position. Never. Give. It. Up.

It’s not everyday you get to go full send in a pace line with your mom after doing 195km. ☄️

Last weekends @oldmutualwealthdc was my 7th DC and this is always a tough day out! This was the closest gap I’ve had to first place in this 202km race, we were second by only 41 seconds!!

But what made it so special that it was the second one that I’ve done with my mom.

Huge thanks to @oright_sa for letting me apart of your team for the day.
