There is a particular intimacy in watching your mother get dressed. As children, we linger around her bedroom, sit on the bed, watch her choose what to wear, do her hair, put on her jewellery. These ordinary moments become part of our earliest understanding of femininity, almost without us noticing. And maybe it’s through these small, everyday things that we also begin to understand what a woman brings into a home.

There is a saying in Lebanon, “el beit beit el-mara”, a man may build the house, but a woman makes it a home. She creates the feeling of comfort and care, sets the tone and energy of the home, and leaves behind so many of the memories that shape our sense of belonging. In so many ways, she is the one who gives a home its identity.

And yet, in Lebanon, a woman still can’t pass down her citizenship to her children in the same way a man can.

This campaign came out as a completely new format for me, for YS. I’ve been asking myself for a long time what actually defines us as women. Then the list kept growing: as Lebanese women, as mothers, daughters, professionals, wives… all these versions of a woman that can exist at once.

‘Work, but not too much.
Be a mother, but don’t forget to be social.
Build a career, but only once your kids don’t need you as much.
Be the bent 3ayle, the devoted mother, the loving wife, the friend that keeps up - and somewhere in between, still have a goal of your own.’

When I had a daughter of my own, I suddenly saw my mother through a different lens - all the sacrifices she made, all the versions of herself she put away just to be called “a mother” instead of her own person. I see them now. Her story is mine too - the same way it’s my Teta Affat’s, and my Teta Samira’s. I used to think my story wasn’t one worth telling, until I realized that the woman I choose to be today will become part of my daughter’s story tomorrow.
