The term "Aniconism" (Anikonismus) was coined by the 19th-century German classical archaeologist Johannes Adolph Overbeck in 1864. It means the practice or belief of avoiding the visual representation of divine beings, sacred figures, or living creatures in art and worship. Often rooted in religious doctrine, it aims to prevent idolatry by substituting direct imagery with symbols, abstract shapes, calligraphy, or empty space.

Gharem asked Vienna based copyist Marcela Chiriac who was trained in the Vienna Academy to paint his photograph of the art class from 2015 in the same technique used by Martin Ferdinand Quadal in 1787. Gharem documented every step in video, in the copyist's studio as well as on site at the Academy, next to the original Quadal painting. In a second large-format painting, we see the scene in which the art class participants are assembling the mannequin.

Stefan Müller (1971, Frankfurt am Main) studied with Thomas Bayrle at the Städelschule Frankfurt. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in international museums and institutions including Neue Galerie Gladbeck, Gladbeck (2024); Friedrichs Foundation, Weidingen (2021); Kunsthalle Gießen, Gießen (2016); No. 55 Art Space, Beijing (2016); and Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2010). Stefan Müller lives and works in Berlin.

We invite you to explore Stefan Müller’s current solo exhibition at Galerie Nagel Draxler Berlin, showcasing his latest works. The exhibition is open to the public until January 4, 2025.

A few impressions from our trip to Bolzano at the end of September. We saw the fantastic performance by Andrea Fraser, “May I Help You” at the Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare. On the next day, the opening of the new private museum of Giuseppe Dalle Nogare next to his Carlo Scarpa House took place where he shows parts of his collection.

Teresa Kutala Firmino
An Economy of Intimacy

On view at Galerie Nagel Draxler Munich

Titled An Economy of Intimacy, the body of work was first conceptualized during a four-week residency in Luanda, Angola after an artist made the assertion “my mother was never chosen” in conversation with Firmino. Loaded with the grief of rejection, the statement was one Firmino could reference back to the systems she witnessed growing up. “It reminded me of how my mother and the women I grew up around spoke about love and relationships with men,” explains Firmino. The descendant of former 32 battalion soldiers who, following the forced removals that came after the South African border war, settled in Pomfret, Firmino has an inherited understanding of the effects of state-led displacement. Telling, the conversations moved between advice on how to keep men committed to dismissively attributing happiness in a marriage to the use of love potions.

Overlooked, An Economy of Intimacy brings to the fore how women in disenfranchised contexts are subject to abuse, erasure and a loss of agency that begets forced reliance. It’s in the subjects’ averted gazes, their elongated smiles in exaggeration, the return of masks, every downward face and upturned ass as well as the recurring white sphere perhaps representing every bitter hard pill swallowed. Referring back to the women in her family, the artist says the women she witnessed knew what they had to do to survive during a time of war, under a patriarchal system.

The group exhibition „Morgenrot und Abendbrot“ with art works by Pourea Alimirzaee, Julia Haller, Xu Jiong, and Lin YiHsuan is currently on view in our Munich gallery. The exhibition is a cooperation with @eachmodern gallery, based in Taipei, on occasion of Various Others 2022. It is a pleasure to have you as our guests!

Taiwanese artist Lin YiHsuan and German artist Julia Haller both explore the essence of painting through basic pictorial elements such as lines, circles, color fields, and surfaces. For his meditations on history and identity, Chinese artist Xu Jiong employs a unique black-and-white ink painting method. Iranian artist Pourea Alimirzaee’s exaggerated post-surrealist portraits and figurations form a colorful counterpoint to the other three positions.

You are warmly invited to visit the show until 3 December, 2022. Exhibition visits are on request.

Last week was Sukkot. For that, Leon Kahane, Rabbi Shlomo Pozner and Fabian Bechtle built a Sukka, decorated with drawings by Eli Nisenbaoum.
The Sukka was located right at the intersection of Almstadtstrasse (formerly known as Grenadierstrasse) and Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse. Grenadierstrasse was one of the main streets of the so called ghetto with open gates. This specific site is highly symbolic as a spacial reminder of eastern Jewish life in Berlin.
We celebrated the first night of Sukkot on October 9th with a feast by Shlomo Pozner. Thank you all for joining!

We are proud to announce, that Sven Johne is one of the artists invited by the curatorial team of the 12th Berlin Biennale to show is work at Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

For „Heilpflanzen im Todesstreifen / Medicinal Plants in the Death Strip, Germany“, @sven.johne’s artistic fieldwork has taken him to the former inner-German border. Once the place where his father and stepfather, as military officers, "protected" the territory of the GDR, Johne now walks the 1400 kilometers from south to north with his children and their friends past the overgrown remains of the former symbol of terror. Johne has combined the resulting images of rampaging children, and the plants that are slowly reclaiming the site, into a series of 25 collages in which he suspends learned periods of the viewer's time: “I wanted this moment of confusion: watchtowers, fences, and the path previously patrolled by soldiers are rendered in black and white, as are the children playing. The flowers are colorful and draw one’s gaze. The difference between what was then and what is now is not immediately apparent” (Sven Johne, 12th Berlin Biennale, 2022).
And yet, while the death strip is allowed to heal, new borders are being erected elsewhere, and Johne reminds us once again how systems can intrude into the lives of each individual and change biographies.

The 12th Berlin Biennale STILL PRESENT! curated by Kader Attia will open its doors tomorrow, June 10, 2022.
The exhibition takes place from June 11 to September 18, 2022.
