We are kicking things off with our official June Book of the Month: Ibis by Justin Haynes! 📖✨
This powerful, magical debut is set in Trinidad and explores the deep bonds of family, folklore, and the realities of migration. It’s a must-read that beautifully captures the depth of Caribbean literature.

Do you know about Cuba's Mariel's 🇨🇺 Boat Lift?
If you don't, it is timely that you read Diaz Gonzalez' The Bluest Sky which draws on this historical event, which occurred in the 1980's.

It is a vivid personal family history.

"A man's country may be cramped or vast according to the size of his heart. I have never found my country too small, though that isn't to say my heart is great. And if I could choose, it's here in Guadeloupe that I'd be born again, suffer and die. Yet not long back my ancestors were slaves in this volcanic, hurricane-swept, mosquito-ridden, nasty-minded island. But I didn't come into the world to weigh the world's woes. I prefer to dream on, on and on, standing in my garden, just like any other old woman of my age, till death comes and takes me as I dream, me and all my joy."

The above is the book's wonderfully evocative and memorable opening paragraph.

Would you be joining us tomorrow as we discuss The Bridge of Beyond? 🇬🇵

"The Caribbean Book Club is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Astrid Roemer, who left us on January 8, 2026, in Paramaribo at the age of 78. Our hearts go out to her family and friends.

We look back with immense gratitude to September 2024, when we featured her masterpiece, On a Woman’s Madness, as our Book of the Month. We were truly honored to have the privilege of meeting her that same month—a memory we will always cherish. Though she is no longer with us, her voice remains immortal through her words. We thank her for everything she gave to the world of literature."
