“I believe that the only reason why PMOS (PCOS) still doesn’t have a cure is because it’s a disease that only affects women… and I hope that a tender awakening raises awareness about this.”
- Asian Shorts 3 Talkback, 28th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival

I’m still over the moon that our little film about PMOS had its international premiere at SIWFF 2026 last month.

Sharing this experience now feels especially meaningful as September draws to a close for PMOS Awareness Month.

My heart is full knowing that so many people from different parts of the world were able to feel what it’s like to live inside a body that no longer belongs to you because of chronic illness—even if just for a few minutes inside the cinema.

There may not be a cure for PMOS, but I am hopeful that one day there will be one. For now, there must be art.

PS: Also really happy that I was able to share this experience with my mom.

Two years ago, I started my journey of developing an interdisciplinary visual art series about a chronic condition that has long been affecting my quality of life since I entered young adulthood.

A year ago, I defended my thesis film exhibit with an experimental film made in collaboration with fellow PCOS warriors and artists. Titled ‘a tender awakening’, the series was presented as a solo exhibit in the Philippines, featuring an experimental film of the same title produced locally, alongside an artist book, sculpture, zine, and installation that were first developed while I was living in South Korea. With my thesis, I hypothesized that the reason why we still don’t have a cure for PCOS is because of gendered structural violence.

We live in a system that continuously neglects women’s health. The lack of research funding for a disease that affects 1 in 8 million women worldwide is a clear violation of women’s rights and welfare. We should refuse to live in a world built without women in mind.

This year, the PCOS community had a historic win that changes everything. PCOS or polycistic ovary syndrome has now officially been renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This shift does not only aim to more accurately reflect the chronic condition that women suffer from, but PMOS validates that what we PMOS/PCOS warriors go through is not only an isolated ovarian issue, but it is a complex, hormonal, metabolic disorder that affects our daily lives.

There may still not be a cure for PCOS/PMOS, but I recognize that this is a huge development for PMOS research that took 14 years and 22,000 surveys. I am hopeful that this renaming will help women get closer to a PMOS-free life. For more info, check here: https://www.endocrine.org/news-and-advocacy/news-room/2026/pcos-name-change

With this, I’d love to share my website that showcases my selected works, which also helped develop a tender awakening. A collaborative labor of love to let my fellow PMOS warriors/cysters know that we are not alone in this suffering. Check it here: https://www.daphneeferrer.art/

Sampung natatanging tinig.
Sampung magkakaibang pananaw.

Thrilled to share that our little film, a tender awakening, is one of @rollingstoneph’s best Filipino films of 2025.

From video installation to a cinema screen, I am forever indebted to everyone who made this film possible. ‘a tender awakening’ was born out of the collective plight of Filipina women living with a chronic disease, Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and my personal struggle with the ongoing lack of representation of PCOS warriors in art, film, and the media. I hope a tender awakening stands as a small offering toward closing this gap and honoring the women left unseen.

A huge thank you to film critics Lé Baltar (Rolling Stone Philippines: first for the Hall of Fame Issue) and Jason Tan Liwag (Rolling Stone Philippines, Digital Issue) for the recognition and review of this film.

a tender awakening — a thesis film exhibit

“For the first time in my life, I felt betrayed by cinema when it failed to give me solace on my hardest days.”

The exhibition, a tender awakening, centers on Daphnee Ferrer’s struggle with PCOS – a chronic hormonal disease she was diagnosed with five years ago. Through clay and sculpture, paper and text, images and sound, Daphnee tells of her search for the representation of her body and struggles.

...

By working with fellow PCOS Warriors and performers: Franchezka Abby Fabregas, Janna Talampas, and Maria Grasya P, the cold gaze of the camera and the totalizing scanning of the medical gaze is pierced by re-presentings of the female body and experiences. This experimental film, video installation, and exhibit not only articulates Daphnee’s personal struggles, but also attests to the encountering and witnessing of other women’s struggles with PCOS. An illness that is not suffered in isolation, but rather collectively, and is therefore not meant to be faced and carried alone.

“There may be no cure for PCOS, but there must be art.”
