POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s C-Space. Nearly 40 creatives came out to celebrate the end of an era as we said goodbye to our old office. We registered people to vote, completed RACE Act postcards, and held a workshop to register people in Cook County jail.

From C-Spaces, fashion show rehearsals, donor dinners, program meetings, civic trainings, and so much more, this office has been our home for nearly 4 years. We formed strong bonds here and built a strong collective of creatives, activists, and organizers who share a vision for building a more inclusive democracy. It was beautiful nurturing those connections and celebrating the legacy we’re taking with us. Cheers to the end of an era and embracing new beginnings with @fineartsbuilding!

Give A Sh*t Fashion Show ★ Noteworthy

Nia White’s fashion journey started with styling in 2020. She attended Columbia College Chicago where she majored in Fashion Studies and picked up a crocheting business on the side. She’s been crocheting for 3 years and recently co-directed and designed for own show, entitled Haven. Naja Haymon’s fashion journey started when she learned how to crochet 3 years ago. She started with making hats and slowly started getting more attention. This year’s Give A Sh*t Fashion Show was her first fashion show experience, and it inspired her to make more creative pieces and put her work out there. In Naja’s words, “this show means a lot to me because not only was it my first show I got to do it with someone who has experience and is now a life long friend”.

For their collection, they wanted to show how Neo-Soul artists express themselves through their music and style of clothing. We recreated looks based on either their album or what they would usually wear.

As Nia describes it, “this is one of many shows but I loved experiencing and getting to know everyone involved. I also gained my friendship along the way.
We believe young creatives can use their art to inspire civic engagement in many meaningful ways. In this fashion show, we’re doing exactly that by using our crochet techniques to reinterpret and embody neo-soul artists. Through texture, color, and form, we aim to echo the same spirit of social awareness and community-building that neo-soul musicians express in their music. By translating their messages into wearable art, we hope to spark reflection, dialogue, and engagement within our own audiences”.

We’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s Give A Sh*t Fashion Show the best one yet! Thank you to all of our talented models, coordinators, and designers who dedicated their time and energy over the past few months to making this show a huge success! Thank you to @tre_king and @brian_x for curating this event to celebrate and uplift our creative collective. This year’s show, themed “Let’s Get To Werk”, was designed to be a call to action for young people to stand up, use their voices, and create change amidst today’s tough times. We hope you left feeling inspired to speak up and fight for equitable change in our city and world.

Local Chicago designers shared their collections while highlighting the importance of youth fusing their artistic brilliance with civic engagement. Their collaboration with our models and production team led to the creation of a beautiful and unique community of creatives. It was an honor working with all of you all for a night of unforgettable memories! This show would not have been possible without them, Brian and Tre, our dedicated modeling coordinators, Chicago Votes staff and volunteers, @chicagoathletichotel, and our amazing audience who bring the energy every year. Be on the lookout for more show content coming soon, and be sure to click the link in our bio to become more active in changing our democracy for the better! #LetsGetToWerk #GiveAShit
