Give A Sh*t Fashion Show ★ Noteworthy

Nia White’s fashion journey started with styling in 2020. She attended Columbia College Chicago where she majored in Fashion Studies and picked up a crocheting business on the side. She’s been crocheting for 3 years and recently co-directed and designed for own show, entitled Haven. Naja Haymon’s fashion journey started when she learned how to crochet 3 years ago. She started with making hats and slowly started getting more attention. This year’s Give A Sh*t Fashion Show was her first fashion show experience, and it inspired her to make more creative pieces and put her work out there. In Naja’s words, “this show means a lot to me because not only was it my first show I got to do it with someone who has experience and is now a life long friend”.

For their collection, they wanted to show how Neo-Soul artists express themselves through their music and style of clothing. We recreated looks based on either their album or what they would usually wear.

As Nia describes it, “this is one of many shows but I loved experiencing and getting to know everyone involved. I also gained my friendship along the way.
We believe young creatives can use their art to inspire civic engagement in many meaningful ways. In this fashion show, we’re doing exactly that by using our crochet techniques to reinterpret and embody neo-soul artists. Through texture, color, and form, we aim to echo the same spirit of social awareness and community-building that neo-soul musicians express in their music. By translating their messages into wearable art, we hope to spark reflection, dialogue, and engagement within our own audiences”.

Last month, Chicago Votes hosted our annual Give A Sh*t Fashion Show, designed to bridge the gap between arts & culture and civic engagement. In times where the art of expression is under attack by political leaders, we are resisting by infusing politics with creative expression. Through these shows, we center the voices of young designers and models while growing our base of civically minded young people. We’re leading Chicago as voters, creatives, and advocates!

A civic culture that is accepting, creative, Black, Brown, and young will create the communities we wish to see. That is our theory of change. The year was a huge step in the direction that i want to be heading in life. In 2023 I set goals for myself and by my surprise i was able to cross some of them off my list this year.
