We did a good thing, but don’t take my word for it.

Michael was a tough one. Years of back pain that simply evaded everyone. Surgeries, injections, even consults with expensive neurologists got him nowhere. It ruined his life, his job, and his attitude (lip readers will figure that one out lol).

Enter peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS).
Michael was game. It was game time. A trial with 2 leads over the cluneal nerve and subsequent implant got Michael to a place he hadn’t been in years - Happy.

Wishing him all the best as makes up for the past decade.

Amazing weekend in Seattle at the Inaugural @seattlesciencefoundation @aaisn.official AAISN Neuromodulation Symposium! Honored to be invited by president Dr. Glen David to co-chairing and teaching this event with some of the most prominent opinion leaders and educators in pain medicine field!

Exceptional key note speech by Dr. Marshall Bedder and lectures by all faculty. Dr. Sudhir Diwan gave a very informative session on chronic pelvic pain and Drs. Jennifer Lee and Kiran Patel on the mechanism of peripheral nerve stimulation and the evidence behind it respectively. I learned lots of new things from Dr. Doug Beall, as always!

Especially excited to learn about deep brain and vagal nerve stimulation for pain from Drs. Andrew Ko and Benjamin Gannon—lot’s of opportunities to collaborate with them at University of Washington.

The rest of the faculty, Drs. John Hathaway and Oliver Clerk represented in their live demos and in the hands on lab.

Wonderful to see Dr. John Loeser recognized for his lifetime contributions to neuroscience and pain management.

He had just started his career as a police officer when everything changed.

After being shot nine times in the line of duty, he was left with a spinal cord injury and unable to move. For the first year, he couldn’t move anything from the neck down. What followed was years of searching to understand if there was anything that could help him regain function and reduce the constant pain.

He tried different treatments, including a traditional spinal cord stimulator, which helped with pain, but he was still looking for more.

Then he explored a different approach with Dr. Jayen Patel.

After receiving a newer spinal cord stimulation system, something started to change. He began noticing sensation returning in his legs. His muscles started responding again. Recently, during physical therapy, he was able to take steps, walking 26 feet with braces and control.

It is not a full recovery, but it is real progress.

As he puts it, “I can feel the sensation… the pressure of my foot actually hitting the ground.”

He can now activate muscles that were not responding before and manage pain in a way he could not before. Even small changes, like knowing when the device is off because the pain comes back, show how much of a difference it is making.

Spinal cord stimulation works by interrupting pain signals and helping improve how the nervous system communicates, giving patients a chance to regain function and improve quality of life when other treatments have not worked.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of joining @nalumedical in Dallas, TX as faculty at another successful Nalu ACADEMY peripheral nerve stimulation BioSkill Lab!

There’s something incredibly rewarding about working alongside colleagues who are passionate about advancing the field of neuromodulation and peripheral nerve stimulation.

Hands-on education is where innovation really comes to life—translating evidence into practical skills that physicians can bring back to their patients and practices. Seeing the curiosity and enthusiasm in the room reminds me why teaching is such an important part of what I do.

Grateful to the Nalu educational team, the faculty, and all the physicians who showed up ready to learn, share ideas, and push the field forward. The future of peripheral nerve stimulation is bright. ⚡️

Excited about the North American Neuromodulation Society conference in Las Vegas this upcoming weekend! Honored to be invited by @nalumedical to share my expertise in peripheral nerve stimulation.

PNS is an excellent neuromodulation therapy, targeting numerous pain conditions and the NALU system has changed many of my patients’ lives. I am looking forward to sharing my experience with other physicians this weekend as I guide them through the lumbar medial branch and cluneal nerve targets.
