With anchors in hand, leaders from University of Michigan Engineering broke ground for a new test environment that will advance shipbuilding in the U.S. and Japan, with collaborators from Japan and Wisconsin's Bay Engineering.

When the test environment, called a shipbuilding test block, arrives in November, it will allow U-M and Japanese researchers to test robotic and AI systems designed to detect and help correct shipbuilding issues. The test block resembles the inside of a ship under construction, and it can be reconfigured to represent different parts of a ship at various stages of outfitting—the installation of pipes, cables, electrical systems and other equipment.

The research will be led by Alan Papalia, a U-M professor of naval architecture and marine engineering, in collaboration with Hideyuki Ando from the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI), an R&D Center within NYK Line, a global shipping and logistics company based in Japan.

The anchor throwers were Todd Allen, associate dean for research at University of Michigan Engineering; David Dowling, chair of naval architecture and marine engineering at U-M; Mingyan Liu, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering at U-M; Akira Fuakishi from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; Nicole Griggs, principal engineer from Bay Engineering, which is building the test block; as well as Hideyuki Ando and Hideki Suzuki from MTI.

Yesterday's groundbreaking ceremony concluded a two-day conference at @newlab Detroit, a tech innovation hub at Michigan Central, and the University of Michigan. Engineers and executives from major shipbuilding, robotics and maritime suppliers in the U.S. and Japan, as well as representatives of government agencies, met to discuss how they can collaborate to advance both nations' shipbuilding. Large group of participants and guests pose for a photo at a shipbuilding groundbreaking ceremony.

Naval architects from around the world joined @namemichigan in celebrating the re-opening of the crown jewel of the U-M’s Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory. The 360-foot Richard B. Couch Model Basin—one of the first and largest towing tanks among American universities—re-opened with a wave-making system that can create larger waves and more realistic sea-surface conditions.

To celebrate, 41 marine research labs across 19 countries provided water to mix into the tank—a tradition dating back 140 years. Some participants even traveled from Germany’s Hamburgische Schiffbau and Sweden’s Kongsberg Hydrodynamic Research Center to represent their institution in person.

The tradition was started by Robert Froude to commemorate his father, William Froude, who built the world’s first towing tank in 1872, in Torquay, England. When Robert Froude built a replacement tank in Haslar, England, in 1886, he mixed in water from the Torquay tank. The field has carried on the tradition ever since.

The original Haslar and Torquay tanks have since closed, but @qinetiqgroup, an English defense company that manages model basins in Haslar, has kept water from the original Haslar tank, and they provided a sample for the U-M ceremony.

Other notable facilities contributed water, including:
- @scotmaritime’s Denny Tank. Built in 1882, the Denny tank is the world’s oldest surviving and second-ever model experiment tank.

- The @nswccarderock’s David Taylor Model Basin—an approximately 3,300-foot tank in Bethesda, Maryland—is one of the largest model basins in the world and a preeminent research facility for the U.S. Navy. The basin opened in 1940 and tested new ship designs during World War II.

2025 Recap ⏱️ This year we took huge strides as a team with getting TiDE on the water, overcoming numerous challenges that came our way, and competing successfully for the first time since 2021! It was a year of perseverance to say the least.

Some highlights are the following:
⚡️Full systems dry test with battery in boat
⚡️Lake X with Mercury Racing in March
⚡️First water test in April
⚡️New motors arrived in August after spring testing failures
⚡️First college team to compete in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in its 37 year history
⚡️Won electric class at the 2025 LOTO Shootout

This fall, we planned to up our top speed from the shootout and attempt to break the electric water speed record at a private event. However, due to some events out of our control with a University freeze on EV project team operations, we had to cancel testing and the record kilo run. During the remainder of the fall semester, the team has been hard at work designing our boat to return to the manned division of the Promoting Electric Propulsion competition. Stay tuned for build updates coming soon.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters who have helped us throughout the year! Our team and project would not be possible without your help, and we at UMEB are grateful for it all.

2026 will be another exciting year, and we have even bigger plans with new boats. The record chase is still on… 🔥
