A few months ago, after TEN years at Alley Twenty Six, I decided it was time to move on and pursue new things. While it has taken me a few months to finally write this, I’m here to say THANK YOU to everyone that has supported me over the years and helped me become the chef I am today.

The biggest thank you goes to Shannon. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make the kitchen of Alley Twenty Six whatever I wanted it to be. Thank you for providing the space for me to grow and improve at my job. Thank you for the incomparable education in spirits and cocktails, even though “I just did the food”. There is no better teacher out there. Just, thank you.

Now that I’ve gotten a little acclimated, I’m happy to announce that I am now the new chef at Nanasteak! It has been a little bit of a roller coaster, but it’s also been a lot of fun. I was lucky enough to reunite with my old friend Logan (hey Tabla family!) and together we’ve been making it happen. I could not have asked for a better support system than him!

I’ve rambled enough. Keep an eye out here and @nanasteak to see what we’re up to! Or just come by, say hi, and grab a bite! Hope to see you all soon! Cheers!

@nanasteak has been on my running list of local restaurants in the Triangle area that I need to try for way too long…..spoiler alert — IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! Everything from the food to the service was exquisite and I can’t wait to go back.

Chef Carrie really worked her magic on all of the dishes that we tried. Our appetizers were incredible — both the crispy pork ribs and tuna crudo were filled with flavor. The ribeye was delicious, but the chargrilled pork chop was the star of the show for me! For sides, we got green beans, baked mac and cheese and their famous French fries, which paired perfectly with the meats.

This bucket list dining experience absolutely lived up to the hype and I will be checking more restaurants off the list this month! 🍽️👏🏾

Old Fashioned & a Manhattan

There’s more to a great steakhouse than a great steak.

Of course, that’s where it starts.

But after that, it’s everything else.

And we don’t just mean the walls, the lighting or how fancy the dining room is.

It’s the people. The service. The noise coming from the tables around you. The bartender who remembers what you drink. The owner walking through the room. The feeling you get when you settle into your chair and realize you’re in absolutely no hurry to leave.

We eat a lot of steak around North Carolina, but these are six of the places we find ourselves going back to most often.

Not saying there aren’t plenty of other great ones.

Just six places we know, love and would recommend to anybody.

🥩 Rustic Roots in Bunn, NC

1. Rustic Roots • Bunn 🥩

Probably the one we’ve written about the most, and for good reason.

Rustic Roots sits out in the woods in Bunn and somehow manages to feel special without ever feeling stuffy. The ingredients matter here, the cocktails matter, the service matters, and they can flat cook a steak.

We’ve had everything from a beautifully cooked steak to filet trimmings over Carolina Gold rice here, and somehow we still have to save room for that brown butter cake.

Our biggest complaint these days?

Y’all found out about it and now we can’t get a table.

2. NanaSteak • Durham 🥩

NanaSteak is a different kind of steakhouse experience.

It has that downtown Durham energy to it. A little more polished, a little more city, but still comfortable enough that dinner feels like dinner instead of some formal ceremony.

This is the kind of place we think about when we want a really good steak, a good drink and a night out where the whole experience feels put together.

3. The Depot on First • Knightdale 🥩

This one has become a regular for us because it does something Knightdale needed badly.

The Depot is inside a restored early-1900s Sears Catalog home overlooking Knightdale Station Park, and the house itself gives the place a personality before the first plate ever hits the table.

Then the food backs it up.
