One of my favorite waltz/turns combos I gave to the students of the Portland Ballet a few years ago. Several of these girls are now dancing in professional companies. On the 20th this school celebrates its 25th anniversary and some will be back to dance on a special gala. Should be fun. @thepdxballet @nancydancy81 @pennylane1967 @riberajim #ballet

As a teacher and director/choreographer, nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see a dancer I taught and made ballets for, go on to have a hugely successful post-performance career. After she retired from dancing, Nancy Davis Lane and her husband James Lane (another principal from my Los Angeles Ballet), opened a school and training youth company in Portland, OR, The Portland Ballet. After 25 successful years Nancy decided to retire as artistic director and her daughter, Lauren is replacing her. I went to their school every year creating new ballets for them, teaching, and staging some Balanchine ballets…and every year I was amazed at how many beautiful dancers they developed. That’s the real proof, how good their students are. Nancy received much of her training at SAB, and was even in one ballet I made for them when she was 15. She later joined the National Ballet in Washington DC, and when that closed she was an original member of my LA company. She was a critic and audience favorite, and was singled out for rave reviews when we played NYC. She will continue teaching guest classes and continuing the Balanchine training she received at SAB and thru me. This is how a tradition is passed on. Here she is as the “Snow Queen” a role I created for her in my NUTCRACKER. If you’re ever in the Portland area you should check when she’s teaching. @thepdxballet @nancydancy81 @pennylane1967 #ballet

A few words from Artistic Director of TPB, Nancy Davis, on the recent passing of Martha Ullman-West:

“Martha and I met when Jim, Lauren, and I first moved to Portland back in 1992. When we opened our studios in 2001, she was extremely supportive and involved in our journey here at The Portland Ballet. She attended many of our special events, rehearsals, and performances, wrote several lovely articles about our organization, and reviewed our programs. I loved her wry sense of humor and considered her a friend. Her contributions to and impact on the arts in Portland and on a national level are immense. She will be sorely missed both professionally and personally.”

Emily Whitman - Former Career Track student

“I am incredibly grateful for the ways in which my time in Career Track prepared me for the world of professional ballet. In my year at TPB, I received excellent training, as the instructors designed classes to push dancers and also provided a lot of individual feedback. The rigor and the intensity of the program built my stamina which facilitated the transition to a demanding company rehearsal and performance schedule. In my time in Career Track, I was also given opportunities to perform wonderful repertoire. Performing Dennis Spaight’s Crayola and George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco was both an immense privilege and accomplishment as a dancer. It was such a gift to work on Crayola with Lauren Lane and Carol Shults, and to work on Concerto Barocco with John, Nancy, and Lauren. The rehearsal process was an amazing learning experience and I am forever grateful to everyone involved in those ballets. These ballets did more than just provide performance experience to build up my resume; they also prepared me for the intense environment of company rehearsals. Overall, the training and performance experiences I received prepared me for the next steps in my career and allowed me to get where I am today.”
