10 favorite things I ate in Italy. This post is unofficially brought to you by the one and only @katieparla, who made sure I wasted zero meals on the trip. A true one of one. Go pre-order her new book.

1. Pizza Rosa from @trattoriadacesare. Tbh I had three pizza rosas in Italy, and they were all incredible but this was my favorite. Also the rigatoni with oxtail sauce is maybe my new favorite Roman pasta?
2. Cicoli (pressed pork cold cut) sandwich from @salumeria_malinconico in Naples. Incredible shop. Wonderful people. Great sandwich. Thinly sliced, laid atop olive oil and creamy ricotta. Warmed in the oven. Delightful.
3-4. Everything we @ecurti1924 including the service and wonderful people. But their famous “trash can” pasta made of leftover Christmas scraps, as well as the pasta with zucchini and pancetta, were absolute highlights.
5. Everything from @villa_inglese_picinisco but I think about this dish of vegetables and Bagna cauda a lot…
6. Everything at the wonderful butcher shop @bottegadelmacellaio, but especially this thinly sliced guanciale, warmed up on a piece of bread.
7. @sora_maria_e_arcangelo is a very special place. But this white ragu with fresh citrus zest and juniper berries broke my brain. Also? The mother of the restaurant has literally been in the back making their signature manicotti for 70 years.
8. Veal saltimbocca (and everything else) at @armandoalpantheon.
9. A perfect margarita pizza by @sasamartucci.imasanielli in Caserta.
10. The most comforting bowl of spaghetti pomodoro from @ristorantelostuzzichino.

Happy 70th birthday to my mom @nancylyonsgarden. We’ve talked about going to Italy for her birthday for decades, to try to connect with the town where we think our family is from, somewhere around Caserta, in Campania. This week, we were able to go. Did we find our family? No. In fact, they may be from a smaller town that we’ll never be able to correctly locate. But we had an incredible trip, and perhaps more importantly, ate at a wonderful restaurant in Campania @ecurti1924, where we ate an very simple salad that tasted like her mother’s and literally brought tears to her eyes. When the owner and mother of the restaurant came out, she hugged my mom and wished her a happy birthday. Her name, Angelina, was the same as her mom and my grandmother. It was a perfect, full-circle moment. Happy birthday mom.

(For the record, the first photo is not at e’curti, but another lovely restaurant with a staggeringly elaborate birthday celebration.)

We had an absolutely wonderful time at @villa_inglese_picinisco in the small mountain town of Picinisco. It’s sort of a dream come true: Benjamin Hirst is a highly accomplished chef, who has worked at some of the best restaurants in Europe before settling into a little bed and breakfast in a town of around 1,200 people with Gaynor Moyniahan, where they run an adorable and perfect place. He cooks dinners for the guests every night making his version of the local mountain cuisine, using all nearby ingredients. They’re an absolute pleasure to talk to. What a find. I was directed to go there with my mom for her 70th birthday by, of course, the inimitable @katieparla. What a joy.

Here are pictures: bookended by the view from my room. Another of a bottle of wine on the rooftop. Another of Ben being featured in the great Silver Spoon @phaidonpress cookbook. Food included things like bagna cauda with vegetables, papa pomodoro with local bean, pumpkin tortelloni with a reduced deer sauce, and a cheesecake with raspberry sauce in the shape of an apple.

I love it when a wonderful chef like Ben finds a place like this to exist and create. I highly recommend it if you want to live in the mountains of Italy, and feel like you’re staying at someone’s house…..except with a wonderful hostess and also a host who happens to be an incredibly skilled and kind chef.

What a labor of love it has been to restore these two 100 year old cottages by the ocean. Built in 1923, this year is their centennial and I’m so proud to have given them a new life instead of a tear down.
I have worked with some incredible people that have brought their love and talent to making this property a beautiful home.
Thank you to @nancylyonsgarden for taking vacant space and bringing in beautiful curves, an outdoor shower and native plants that are now home to bees, butterflies and apparently a raccoon that likes to sleep in the sage by the stairs. Thank you to @treecarela that delicately pruned the 100 year old Hollywood Juniper, giant Yucca, and fruiting loquat tree. Completely gated front and back courtesy of @ecgatesinc that really understood the rustic beach house cedar finish.
The interiors were painstakingly restored by the talented Marcos Sanchez while I cobbled together vintage pieces from @arch_salvage_pasadena and suitcases of fixtures from Paris.
The wonderful @theplatformexperiment got the vibe right away and did an incredible job with staging the interior design.
The lovely compound is now listed with the equally lovely @alexhoerner ❤️
